I have just purchased a new Subaru car. It has a USB port in it I have tried to play music on the flash drive. tIt appears that the system only recognizes WMA format. I am not real familiar with the system. If there is someone out there that knows the system I would appreciate some feed back. Also if the system only accepts WMA format can some one tell me where can I find an app to change the format of the music.

Do you own an iPod? The only device you've attempted to connect to the auto's port is a USB flash drive with music on it? Perhaps the problem is the flash drive. Btw, for curious minds, how do you manage playing songs when using this flash drive?

I have just purchased the car and all this is greek to me. What I can say is if I have the music in WMA format it plays on the car radio. if its in CDA format or MP3 format the radio does not recognize the music. Unfortunately I do not own an IPod. I see programs on the computer but do not know which ones work and which ones are junk. if there is anything else you can suggest I am open to listening and appreciate the help you have given me

WMA is the Windows Media format and if you import songs in to Windows Media Player, then likely are in that format. You might be able to find a freeware program that will convert MP3 format in to WMA, or you could just try importing your MP3s in to Media Player and see if there is a method to convert them when importing.

A Google search of "Convert MP3 to WMA" turned up this.

Sure, buy an iPod.

Even if/when you reformat and find a converter to convert the files on your flash drive, you're still using a flash drive to listen to music. Seems rather clunky, at best. As mentioned, how will you manage your music? i.e. skip songs, etc.

So you have both WMA and MP3 music on the same drive? Have you tried playing music off your cell phone via the USB port? I suggest googling "music through Subaru USB" and see what other owners have to say.

I would presume the head unit has the capability to manage files on the flash drive. To what extent, who knows. But, it almost certainly would have some capability to do so, otherwise it would be nearly useless.

There are several subaru owners forums, you might have better luck asking there. I see several message threads about playing music from the USB port. The audio system does support mp3 files as well as wma.

Most new cars have the ability to connect via Bluetooth to a smart phone or other devices like an iPod, or iPad. That is by far the easiest way to listen to music. Also, you should be able to connect a cable from your smart phone or device to your car audio and listen that way. If you don't have music saved on a device, you can listen to pandora or stream other music.

The best way to learn about different methods is doing a search on YouTube and watching a video on how to do things. I bought a new Toyota and a Mazda in 2016 and each company has their own method on how to set up the audio. The Toyota is way easier and better than the Mazda. The Suburu probably has its own design or method and best to ask the dealer what they recommend. Call your person that sold you the car for help. They usually are happy to help because they want referrals.

Where did you get the .wma files that you say worked? Your car is not limited to .wma and will play .mp3 as others have noted. Were the two types of files on the same usb drive, or different? If you describe exactly what you did (what devices you used, etc), and the outcome, we could better help you.

I changed some of the files to WMA and they did play I also changed some to MP3 and they worked also
