Without having to book an organized tour, can anyone tell me about any cenotes that are close to Grand Mayan Riviera Maya that I can get to using preferably a collectivo (but will also take a taxi if need be).

We are planning on checking out cenote Azul in cenote alley just north of Akumal but also looking for something closer to the resort as well.

Any advice would be really appreciated since I am not familiar with cenotes in this area.

Thank you

For diving or snorkeling? Here's a website that may help. By the way, if taking colectivo, be prepared for a very long walk from 307.

Yal Ku Lagoon

I like Yal Ku Lagoon, where the cenote water enters the ocean. It is at the end of the road in Akumal. They charge to enter the park, but do have services. Lots of colorful fish in quiet protected waters. I don't find much to see with snorkeling in a regular cenote. If you are in the area you should also stop by Xcacel beach, just past Chemuyil. To the right down the beach and on a jungle path is a nice cenote where you can swim. The beach is a great hidden treasure, with snorkeling on the far left side, and great sand in the middle. The only problem is a lack of shade, chairs or vendors. Because it is a tutle sanctuary, there is a 10 peso charge.

There are TONS of cenotes in that area. I recommend purchasing the mapchick map of the riviera Maya. There is a lot of information on where to find the cenotes. One year, we spent a whole day driving to the many cenotes in the area, using Map Chick's maps. They are the BEST maps i my opinion.

I agree with the above.
