Carpet Recommendations for High-Traffic Area?

Inspired by the upgraded kitchen countertops thread, I'd really appreciate some help with carpet suggestions.

We have a media room which basically functions as our family room. It gets a lot of through-traffic, as it has an entrance directly from the front entry through to the country kitchen. Unfortunately, we originally selected a nice berber carpet for this room which has not aged well with the high usage.

Any recommendations for a carpet which can stand up to this type of traffic?
I've even toyed with the idea of taking out the carpet all together and putting in more hardwood or some other non-carpet surface, and using an area rug for the center area.

I hate carpet. I am Mr. Anti-carpet. I will never have a stitch of carpet anywhere in any house I own.

First thing I do when I buy a house is to rip out all the carpet. Carpet isn't just bad. Carpet is evil.

"What's the best carpet for a high-traffic area?"

Rotoprinted porcelain tile.

We've had a couple of Berber type carpets in a similar area that have held up for about 6 years which I think is reasonable. One big thing for me is making sure I upgrade the pad because I think that helps with both feel and longer life. We have carpet now in our bedroom that's still in good shape because it doesn't get that much traffic. But by the entry door and bathroom door that pad has broken down, so even though the carpet isn't worn, you can feel the wood floor. The carpet was from Costco and they didn't offer a pad upgrade (or maybe I just didn't ask).

Good pad and a pure wool carpet.
The wool will resist stains better and clean better. Do you see how well a sheep scrubbs up!
If you have pets or rug rats avoid chemical protectors. They are endocrine disruptors.

Agreed. Carpet is nasty. It traps dirt, dander, dust. There's a reason hospitals don't have carpet - it makes people sick.

We ripped out all the carpet and tile in our new house and did stained concrete. It's modern, clean, and looks great. We will add area rugs for softness here and there. Area rugs can be thoroughly cleaned, unlike carpet.

High Traffic Areas

We don't use carpet in hallways or by doorways (although we usually place a rug to wipe feet or literally catch dirt & replace the rug when it wears out) but we are putting carpet in all the bedrooms of our new home.

The kids rooms (4) will all have a Berber carpet....it's tough and should resist stains but still be comfortable for playing on the floor and crawling.

Haven't decided completely on the master bedroom but will definitely have something soft, warm, and durable (although definitely not a high traffic area). I hate getting out of bed or walking around on a cold surface (and if I'm just covering the floor with a rug anyway???)

We are thinking of a carpet insert for the living/great room. We will have hardwood throughout the main living areas (higher traffic areas) but it seems like such a waste to spend all that money in hardwood just to cover the area between the couches/sitting area with a rug :ponder:

Personally I've had rugs and hardwood; and carpet - the carpets I've chosen "show" less dirt.....but when I'm cleaning I clean everywhere....so I don't think one area is any cleaner than another.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had also heard cork is a softer surface that may work, but I know nothing about it, so will have to check all this out.
