Are Carnival Cruises really like how they have been shown in the media?

I have only been on one cruise Pullmantur an all inclusive for the Latin American market. It was pretty tame.

It is a floating 4 star resort that takes you from location to location. Casino, art gallery, ship store, spa, pools, hot tubs, and bars. Lots of bars.

If your idea of a "Fun Cruise" is bar hoping, karaoke nights, standup comedy, and bar stool live musician acts you will have a great time. Otherwise it is a reasonably affordable cruise if your interest is in the ports of call and the ship is just transportation with food/lodging included.

... although I've only been on one Carnival cruise and that was just after Covid so maybe my experience was just underwhelming because of timing.

Have no idea but will let you know after Feb of next year.
DW wanted a cruise for our 30th anniversary. We have never been and didn't care where to.
We have a week 7 every year at coco beach. Being the port is very close we decided to go for week 6 and then return to our time share. That limited our choices. We needed a Saturday departure for 7 days. Returning the following saturday. The carnival Mardigra checked all the boxes without having to add hotel nights etc We are pretty low key and don't need a lot of amenities. we read a lot of reviews and are prepared for the drama but will hope for the best.
Reviews also indicated 7 days were much less problematic than 3-4 day cruises.
