I've searched the forum for restaurant suggestions and found most are recommending chains - Claim Jumper, PF Chang etc.

We like to try restaurants unique to an area - with some character and local charm - and of course good food.

We are 4 adults, no kids (prefer restaurants that do not cater to kids)

I would love some recommendations for the area near Four Seasons Aviara.

Pacheco: Have lived here 10 years, here are a few unique places to eat:

West Steak and Seafood 760/930-9100
Le Passage 760/727-7097
Bellefleur 760/603-1919
Vigilucci's 760/434-2500
King's Fish House
Fish House Vera Cruz

Try googling them for views of their dining.

Let us know your food preferences (below are mine), and when you will be here. Carlsbad is a laid back town so most cater to kids. Some really like the hidden gem Tuscany in the Vons center less than a mile from Aviara. Food is good, a bit more formal, and live music in the lounge. http://www.tomasos.com/carlsbadHome.htm

Likewise, Beachhouse restaurant in Cardiff has the Top-of-the market with happy hour 7 days a week with a patio that feels like you're over the ocean, and few kids. http://thebeachhouse.com/

My favorite restaruant is Siamese Basil if you like thai food: 527 S Coast Highway 101, Encinitas, CA. (760) 753-3940‎.

For good steaks and seafood try Vigiluccis Steakhouse http://www.vigiluccis.com/seafood_steakhouse.html or Italian http://www.vigiluccis.com/trattoria_italiana.html

I hope you'll be traveling up to the Orange county area. If so you should try the crab cooker on Balboa. It is a funky place with great food but very casual. The serve on paper plates & paper cups.

It is just as you come onto the peninsula (about 10 blocks), next door to the old spaghetti factory

Tuscany

I'll second the suggestion of Tuscany. We really like this little Italian restaurant. It's not cheap, but it has great food and excellent service. We have been there several times over the years and it has never disappointed us. In fact, when we were at Aviara for a week last month, we ate there twice.

BTW, Four Seasons does a pretty good Friday night seafood buffet. You name it and the seafood is there -- lobster, shrimp, clams, etc. The dessert bar is very extensive as well. It is pretty expensive.

I was down in Carlsbad a couple of weeks ago. I found this place Sammy's Woodfired Pizza.

It's not a cheap pizza joint, but it's not "super expensive" as some of the reviewers said either. The tappas are decent. Try Baba Ganoush.

Sammy's makes a decent pizza, but alas it too is a chain...though it's only down here in SoCal and in Vegas.

It can be hard sometimes to find unique places sometimes that aren't chains/franchises. I guess if the chains are only local chains such as a Sammy's or King's Seafood, and not a nationwide chain, I guess those can be considered unique, since they may not be where you live.:)

While not in Carlsbad, it is in nearby Del Mar and is right on the beach - we have been there for lunch and dinner and really enjoyed it.

Sammy's is a great salad place as well as pizza; but I think the original request was for unique places. Sammy's has many locations around San Diego. They had a bad fire a year or so ago and rebuilt along with a slightly different menu. It is in a 'restaurant row' with Marie Callender's and a couple others in same parking lot.

Try Dini's at the Tamarack Beach Resort. A local hangout with great early specials. Also, Red Tracton's at Winner's Circle on Via De La Valle in Solana Beach, also a local hangout. A little more pricey but great food. Both have coupons at restaurant.com.

We really like
Fish House Vera Cruz (Our absolute favorite)
Kings Seafood
La Especial del Norte (Mexican in Leucadia)
Jake's in Del Mar
Fish Market in Del Mar Next to Winners Circle

Then Pizza Port in Carlsbad has excellent pizza and is very active
For a quick meal we ate at a Wahoos fish Tacos on the way to Carlsbad Inn in San Clemente There are others around Southern California. The fish and other food there was good..

Bill's suggestion of the Crab cooker in Newport is also excellent

Be sure to order Dini's special salad -- it is soooo delicious!:cheer:

Pizza Port.
Damn good pizza. If you like beer, this is the place to go.. Pizza Port is a Micro Brewery that makes world class beers. They won best Large Brew Pub of the Year back in September.
