Care rental Ft. Lauderdale

Can anyone offer insights into the best way to get good value on car rental in Ft. Lauderdale (and Florida generally)? Am I best to rent at the airport or buy online beforehand? I once got really hosed in Las Vegas on car rental (talked into insurance that was alrady covered by my trravel rewards card, etc.) and want the best value.
 
I always rent at the airport. I book the cheapest I can find as early as possible and keep checking periodically because prices almost always go down as you get closer (sometimes even 3-4 days prior to pickup.) I found my cheapest rates thru BJs Wholesale Club but recently joined Alamo's Insiders Club (free) and found those rates to be the same or cheaper than BJs. I never buy any insurance... I pay more than enough for my own car!
 
Recently returned from a long week-end in Traverse City, MI. We decided last minute to rent a car and the rates were HIGH. Then I remembered some Tuggers touting COSTCO for car rental so I checked them out - we saved approx $80 just by using the coupon code and link to Budget - LIKE!!!
