I need to rent a car for our week in Vegas. Where do you recommend I rent from? I remember seeing a thread awhile back about one of the rental places that was not very desirable. I searched but can't find the thread. So if you have information about renting a car in Vegas, please share. I need to get this done ASAP.

Thanks for the help....
Terri

I would do Priceline and name your own price. I booked a full-size rental for Vegas 3/16-3/23/07 and got it for $16.00 per day.

I used Priceline as well. Got a standard for $15 a day from March 4 - 7, and it will be with Avis. Previously got a Hertz car in Las Vegas using Priceline.

Usually, Dollar and Thrifty are the least expensive. I've been able to rent from either without having to resort to Hotwire or Priceline and get about the same rate. If you sign up for either Dollars Fastlane or Thrifty's Blue Chip service (free) you can skip the line and go straight to your car. The shuttle bus driver should have your contract. All you have to do is pick up your car and drive away.

There is another rental car company called USRentals. I've rented from them twice without any problems. I've seen others write that they had issues with them. Based on my own personal experience I wouldn't be afraid to use them.

One thing to keep in mind, in Vegas as time goes on rentals seem to become more expensive. At least that's the way it's worked for me these last few years. If you've waited until a couple of months or a few weeks before securing a rental car, then I'd check Hotwire and Priceline.

Keep in mind that in Vegas, if you hit landing time wrong, lines at rental car agencies can be exceptionally long. In the old days I've stood in line for close to an hour just to get to the counter and have to wrestle the attendant over the upsales the try to tag you with (pre-paid gas, larger car, collision damage waiver et.....). Having those prefered customer contracts (fastlane, blue chip, fastbreak, #1 gold et....) where you bypass that line can be a blessing at times.

I assume this is base price.
What's the total/week after adding 11.00 USD AIRPORT ACCESS FEE,
SALES TAX
REGISTRATION RECOVERY SURCHG
GOVERNMENTAL SERVICES FEE
2.29 USD (COUNTY TAX ) ?

The taxes on car rentals in Las Vegas are outrageous !! However, to answer the question, just go to one of the rental company web sites and configure a similar rental to see how much they all add up to be

Agree about LV taxes. Here is my Priceline breakdown,
Subtotal: $112.00
Taxes and Fees: $68.80

I have consistently found Dollar to be the best for price. Like Doug said, join their club so you don't have to go to the counter.

I have an intermediate size care through Thrifty for a 7 nights.
Rental time charge $98
Concession recovery fee $9.90
Customer Facility Charge $21.00
Highway Surcharge $9.03
Sales Tax $8.75
Vehicle Licensing Fee $3.96

(total taxes and fee's $52.64)

Estimated Grand Total $151.64

Plus, I get to skip the line since I signed up for Blue Chip.

This is for our upcoming March trip to Vegas.

I actually have saved a couple of bucks and avoided standing in line to get my car by booking direct. Priceline might save a few dollars more but not enough to make standing in line worth it in this case.

Current rates if I had waited until tonight to reserve would be a different matter. Thrifty and Dollar would both want about $227 total for a mid-size car.

It pays to be able to book ahead when you can but, if you can't, there's always Hotwire and Priceline to back you up.

.

I tried to get a reservation with USRent a Car, but they are only taking people who have a European drivers license. Their web site would not quote me in US$$, so I called and emailed. Got the same response.

Are you talking about another USRentals? If so, please share the web site info.

thanks!

I googled them from what I could remember their web site is at http://www.us-rentacar.com/ They now list having a counter in McCarren Airpot. I had no problem getting an online quote from their site in US$

My reservations is with Enterprise, $110 base plus taxes, total $165.97/week
I would take midsize for $153/week anytime but its not available for the end of March.
The dates are an important variable. You don't get the same quote for different weeks.

Most of the time it's pretty close. Our Oct week will be about $20 higher than our March week. Prices have been going up a little every year since we started renting cars in Vegas.

With Vegas, in the past it's been important to reserve early. Very rarely have I seen prices come down in the Vegas rental car market. In other markets that's not true. Generally speaking, the closer the date the lower the price. Our reservation for Nashville in June of this year has finally started to come down a little. In the end though, I'll probably end up going through Hotwire or Priceline in Nashville. The prices are just to high ($292 for a 9 night rental). I've found it to be the same when we travel to FL. Hotwire or Priceline generally end up saving us $60+ for the week long rental.

I wouldn't call Hotwire comparison listed below as pretty close. I compared today L.Vegas rental rates for the week of March 23 - 30 and March 30 - Apr. 6 The results I got are significantly different.

One needs to keep in mind that Hotwire Discount Rate bookings are final and cannot be refunded, changed, exchanged, or transferred, Booking with Hotwire too far in advance could get you into Hot water:D

In Vegas, if you're booking on relatively short notice, then Hotwire is going to be the better deal most of the time. For us, it's not. We book early enough to get a low rate that is often comparable or lower than what is offered by Hotwire or Priceline.

The trick, just like with getting great timeshare exchanges, is to book early. The smart thing to do is to continue to watch rates and see if they drop. Most of the time with Vegas they haven't dropped but every now and then I'll be surprised.

Thanks for the replies. I booked a car using Priceline for $14 per day, total 161.00. Wow those taxes are high. I feel I got a good deal on the rate, even if I did wait to book it. It is a standard car (I am hoping for a mustang coupe).
Counting the days to Vegas......
Terri

At the current rates I'm seeing, you saved yourself about $60. In my book that's a good deal.
