I'm traveling to Phoenix in April and I've heard that you can get better rates on car rentals by picking up and dropping off outside of the airport.

Does anyone know, or have experience doing this?

Is there transfers available from the airport or would I have to take a cab? Is it worth the hassel???

Thanks in advance... we're staying at the Marriott’s Canyon Villas at Desert Ridge.

:hi:

Based on advice on tug, I am picking off and dropping off airport. I do not have the exact numbers but for a 6 day rental, I save over $120 for a comparable airport rental. That alone is worth the short bus ride to the offsite. I will try to remember to post details here when I get to the booking info

There is also a Hertz desk at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge, so you can pick up a car there. The last time I checked, I could pick up my car there and drop it at the airport for about $150 less than picking up at the airport. I think the fees only apply for airport pickups, not dropoffs.

I actually ended up taking a train to Flagstaff, and picked up my rental car at the Amtrak station. Rentals in Flagstaff were less than anything I found in Phoenix.

The Phoenix airport car rental center is very convienent with all the agencies located under one room and one shuttle service to/from the airport. But the taxes at that location are some of the highest I've seen. I found some cheap prices on car rentals but the taxes more than doubled the price!

I'm currently in Phoenix with a rental car. I arrived on Friday and am leaving this Saturday. I first checked National (the company I use most often to rent) to pick up at Sky Harbor Airport upon arrival Friday night. The quote was $502.

Then, I checked what it would be to pick up the car the following morning at the Scottsdale Aiport, which is close to my hotel (Westin Kierland Villas). The cost: $211.

The only issue was a $60 cab ride from the airport to the rental car location (which I could have avoided if I simply had the cab take me to Scottsdale road and then took the bus). Overall, however, it was more than worth the trouble. While Sky Harbor's location is great and their rental car system is outstanding, its certainly not worth nearly $300 for a week-long rental.

When we were at PHX I found FOX Car Rental to have the best prices. Before making airline reservations I checked car rental prices. Then I made airline and car rental reservations together. That was cheaper than having seperate reservations. The airline used FOX. Just a thought. Canyon Villas is a great resort, enjoy!!!

Thanks for the responses!

I'm Heading to Flagstaff from the airport, so I may look into a Train Ride on Amtrak.

Can I access the train at the airport or is it a big hassel for that too.

Leet me know, Thanks!

I want to clarify my previous post. I took Amtrak to Flagstaff instead of flying into Phoenix. I traveled on the Southwest Chief from Topeka,KS to Flagstaff, and then drove to Phoenix (after spending the night). Unfortunately, there is no train from Phoenix to Flagstaff. I think there is bus service since I heard some train passengers mention they were taking a bus to Phoenix.

Flagstaff is conveniently located between Sedona and the Grand Canyon, and is about 2 1/2 hr. drive to Phoenix. I apologize for the confusion.

You might check on Priceline. We've been able to secure cheap rates in various airport locations through Priceline.
