Just returned from an exhausting week at Canyon Villas. Over the years in an attempt to provide " activities", Marriott has paved over every speck of ground in the courtyards. Every single unit now seems to face a pool, shuffleboard, pickleball, basketball, ping pong, Jungle Gym or other noise producing area.

Our unit faced the Shuffle Board courtyard, and some bozo was out there with his personal boom box and speakers playing his tunes at concert level decibels every night while his kids ran around screaming .
Other areas had pre-teens skate boarding on courtyard walks. Things were so crazy out of control, and this isn't even school vacation time ( which we try to avoid).

I know Marriott loves to market as " Family Friendly ", but honestly not everyone wants to vacation exposed to activity and noise 24/7.

Would love to find some Peace and Quiet. Any suggestions?
Rant over.
Thanks.

We are heading to CV next week and hope that won't be the case when we are there. Couldn't management be informed of the noise level and go out and have the people turn off the music and not allow skateboarding. This can be accomplished with a set of rules and quiet hours given out at check in and with signs at the courts, etc. They should also have the Prevention Patrol out to make sure people are not disturbing others. What time of day/night was your experience with the music, etc.?

Management WAS informed. They said boom box was OK until 9 pm. It gets dark there by 6 now, and then they turn the party lights on through tout the property, encouraging this nonsense. Many nights the racket lasted well past 11, but there appears to be no security on the property to monitor. At 7-8 am, they are at it again. So there was noise non stop basically 7 am-11pm.

There are no posted signs about quiet hours and no signs prohibiting bikes or skateboards— there was an adult riding his recumbent bike around the courtyards as well ( no relation to skateboard crowd).

By the time you get there, there will likely be cooler temps, and maybe the pools won’t be as bad as now. But even without swimmers, the resort has constant piped in music. Right now the pools are open until 10.

We were previous owners, but sold our week back to Marriott for Destination Points. In the past, there were peaceful courtyards to sit. All that is paved over with ball courts and such now. We won’t be returning.

The resort which used to be at the northern outskirts of Phoenix, is now essentially an urban property due to sprawl. Tatum Blvd runs along one side— heavy traffic and noise there as well. The back of the property has a subdivision so close that their balconies and back yards overlook the villas as well.

We actually made an overnight trip to the Westin La Paloma in Tucson for some welcome peace and quiet mid week.

I finally realized that reviews that state “ Great for Families” really are a euphemism for Kids Can Scream.

I will say the rooms were very clean.

Perhaps the best rooms to request would be ones that front the golf course or perhaps the Spa Pool?

Wow, when we were there 2 years ago we didn't have any of what you are describing. There weren't many kids as they were in school. Maybe with Covid kids are doing remote schooling still. I won't hesitate to talk with management and express any disappointments I find. We, too, were looking for a more quiet couple of weeks.

We requested the Golf Side unit and got a message back saying since that is the most popular request they may not be able to meet our request. My response is that as longtime owners at CV we expect to be given a priority for the unit over people who are exchanging in or using points. They said no guarantees.

I'll post back what we find the status to be.

I must say, from the peanut gallery (I have not been there), this resort sounds like my idea of a nightmare vacation. May be perfect for families with kids they want to let loose.

Sounds like the OP needs to buy some a Vistana timeshare with StarOptions to go to The Westin Kierland Villas instead!

We can trade in there thru Interval. We still have non Marriott properties to trade. Thanks for suggestion!
Hoping eventually MCV owners will have access to the Westin properties. That was advertised to us at our Sales presentation, but we were too uninformed to understand the difference between our Bonvoy account and MVC. :(

Sounds nightmarish on so many levels. Thanks for sharing and one less location off my dance card for a multitude of reasons…

Don't take this complaint to heart. Been there many times. The OP probably has some noise issues. But no more that usual. I like this resort and it's not was the OP describes. Bit of an exaggeration and drama in the mix. We all deserve to have a rant and this not a normal reflection of Canyon Villas

I also have an issue with the OP since this is the first time posting and he or she comes out straight up with a rant. Not defending MVC or Canyon Villas as we all have had our fair share of issues with this corporate entity over the years. But this one smells fishy.

Perhaps you just weren't there when some guy with his portable speaker/boombox was playing it out in the courtyard?

For sure I was not. However if this issue was that irritating to me I would have been in the face of the property manager until the issue was resolved. Ranting about it here obviously did not solve the issue. To smear the entire resort and paint it with Urban sprawl does not fix anything.

To tell you the truth I was there for 2 nights in a lockoff and was in fact in a very worn out room that could have used a remodel. It was at the end of life cycle. Took it with a grain of salt. I did have an issue with the scorpion that was found in my luggage. Yes I wrote an email along with photo evidence. Maint manager called and apologized. As a token of appreciation he sent me 10k of points.

The point of my story is that if you have a problem you need to solve it with the root cause. Lord knows I rant plenty around these parts of Tug :) However I will always post the issue after I have beat the problem like a dead horse.

This OP sounds like a Hit and Run. Just sayin.

Many years ago I was at the quiet pool at Canyon Villas. There were some guests there I suspect were locals infringing on the peace and tranquility. One of the resident guest almost got into a fist fight with the offending noise makers. I should have called security.

Now that I will say is a problem with Canyon Villas, and Ocean Point. The locals taking advantage of the said resorts amenities. How many times have we see that incursion abused by locals. That is an ongoing issue at many resorts next to residential areas.

We were previously owners since pre construction. We probably have bern over 6-7 times in the past 12 years, but have not visited for about 3 years. I posted our experience because it was so unpleasant. Things are definitely different than our previous visits.

That is possible with the guy on the recumbent bike. However there are no signs prohibiting bikes or skateboarding. I think in the past there were.

You are correct that there are now residential homes surrounding the resort and there is no controlled access to the property except for pool.

Formerly guests at CV could park free at the adjacent JW. Those lots are no longer free, but CV lots are free.

I've gone to CV annually for the last 10 years. I've never had the problem that the OP mentioned. But rather than letting one inconsiderate person ruin my vacation, I would have insisted to the evening manager that the music stop at 9 pm or whatever hour is in the rules. Also, after 1 night of inconvenience, I would have spoken to the GM the following morning. It is surprising that the residential houses to the West weren't a bit irritated also. If the music was as loud as the OP said, it must have bothered them as well.

My favorite location is by the shuffle board court in the 2600 building. That is the same location the OP mentioned. It is usually pretty quiet. But I usually go in the months of Dec to March when most guests are a bit older. In the warmer seasons I have observed that there are a lot more young people and young dads with active noisy kids. I have noticed the same thing at the Marriott resorts in Palm Desert.

I had an issue once with Marriott Palm Desert. I spoke with the then GM, (a very nice lady) about DSV eliminating a "quiet" or "quieter" pool. She explained her position. I explained mine and told her that I was still unhappy. So, I posted on the FB site for either Marriott Corporate or on the Marriott CV site. In 3 hours I got a call back from the GM saying she had been contacted by corporate and that effective the next morning that pool would resume being a "quieter" pool. I was surprised by the power of social media. It rarely hurts for a person to "keep their cool" but escalate the issue to a higher level.

Ixchel,

Thanks for your reply. Welcome to Tug. Sorry you had a miserable experience. Problem I see with Marriot in general is that they take us loyal customers for granted. Now with this covid era customer service has further eroded.

BTW, on some portable Blue Tooth speakers it is possible to pair your own phone to his speaker if you are reasonably close. With my JBL Charge 3 BT speaker, I can capture the speaker and over ride what my wife is playing. If you capture you can play your own music at whatever volume level you want.

We reported to front desk but were advised that boom boxes were permitted. We didn't believe that screaming children should be reported, since that is what kids do. There are no signs prohibiting skateboards.

For families with active children, this may be the perfect vacation. For people looking for a peaceful desert oasis, maybe not.

The buildings and grounds are well maintained and staff are pleasant.

Great idea!

I probably would have requested to be relocated. Even if I had to pay the housekeeping charge. Sorry you have a bad time.

Excellent advice. Thank you. Although we are experienced Marriott owners, we are not so experienced in how things get resolved at the Corporate level. Thanks for your advice.

We were assigned a 2 BR villa, not a lock off 2 BR. Apparently the 2 BR non lock off are limited to certain buildings.
But yes, the last building in the complex by the Relaxation Pool might be better. We have had Golf Course view there before, and those were also nice, but heavy traffic noise as Tatum Blvd is close. It's amazing how urban the area is now. When we purchased over 10 years ago it was literally out in the desert.
