This will be my first trip to Cancun. I've been researching Cancun airport transportation options. Looks like a person can book a private car or van ahead of time RT to and from the hotel zone for appx. $50. for 1-2 people. It also looks like they have a public shuttle or collectivo that leaves the airport and goes to the hotel zone for appx. $12. Then a person would take a taxi to return to the airport. Has anyone taken the public shuttle or collectivo that does not have to be reserved ahead of time? If so, how bad was it? Is it air-conditioned and did it take forever to get to your hotel? Is it difficult to locate this public shuttle at the airport? Thanks for your help.

Well, the public shuttle could be by bus or van. I've never been daring enough to take the bus, but I have booked vans at the airport. Most are suburbans(Chevy) and they fill them to capacity before heading off to resort row. How long it takes you to get there depends on where everyone is going and how many stops need to be made before your destination. I once arranged one for 6 people going to the Tri_royals and we got there in 10 -15 minutes after about 15 minutes of waiting at the airport for the arrangements to be finalized. Our cost was less than $10 per person (including tip). For some other tips for first-time visitors you might check these 2 links: http://www.geocities.com/tonygraz/triptips.html

Tonyg--thank you for those sites. I printed info from two of them. One last, well maybe not last, question. Is there a booth inside the Cancun terminal where a person pays for the public shuttle or does a person just walk outside and pay at the shuttle itself? I ask because in the Mazatlan airport there is a booth, but I ignore it and just walk out to the shuttles and pay there. In Puerto Vallarta, I pay at the booth inside the terminal.

Be careful as you exit customs with your checked luggage as many people with official airport vendor badges will agressively try and get your attention and pull you over to their booth to sign you up for free transportation with a timeshare presentation and deposit involved.
You should pass thru this area and then The official transportation desk that sells ticket for the Shared Van sevice or private Taxi is just befor you exit the airport building.
Shared van service is in Air conditioned Vans and costs about $9 USD per person one-way.
Taxi back to the airport for upto 4 passengers is about $18 USD

Many people prefer to buy pre-arranged round-trip transportation thru Brant Boston or Cancun Valet. You will can expect to pay alittle more this way if there are less than 4 passengers.

We used Cancun Valet this past June for 6 people. Roundtrip from/to the airport was $65...I think I tipped around $7-10 each way as we had lots of luggage. They bill your credit card the day before you travel. Same $65 fee for up to 10 people if I remember correctly. They email you a detailed instruction sheet on how to find them at the airport and they warn you of what Jeff H stated above about guys hijacking your luggage to get your fare. If you only have two-three people in your party, I think Thomas Moore is cheaper @ $17 per person round trip.

A group of 6 used Brant's service in late April. They waited for us even though 2 flights were delayed 2 hrs. Would definitely use them again. Used them round trip.

Just returned on Saturday :(... We used Brant and paid $65 for six people for round trip service. They were on time and easy to use (had our names on a sign). The "sharks" tried to tell us we had to use Thomas Moore, but we didn't. They were high dollar for everything. We rented a car on the web for Avis across the street for 50% of the quote the store gave us. Went to Puerto Morelles (bad speeling) and got a boat to snorkel to $20 each (2 Hours). Then drove to Tulum. Tulum closes at 5 not 7 like the brochure states. Had a great time!

ejc, there's a lilttle ticket window near the door where you would pay your fare for a shared van service. I want to say that it's to the right of the door, but I am not 100% sure. It's about $8 or $9 p/p, since I stay at the Royals, I've not used this optinon in a very long time. But it's adequate if you don't mind the possibility of making stops at other's resorts.

Fare to Mayan Palace, Riviera Maya

What are the best options for two persons to get from Cancun Airport to Mayan Palace, Riviera Maya ? Is there a shared van service, if so what is the fare ? We have used the van service in the past to go to Cancun Royals and were satisfied.
Also, which car rental agency would you recommend in the event we decide to book a car for a few of days. We will be at the Mayan Palace for two weeks but don't need a car all the time.

Kola - contact the Mayan Palace. They have recently implemented free transportation TO the MP from the airport. I am not sure whether it includes RCI or SFX echangers, but it does include owners. We plan to use it for ourselves and guests when we are there in February 2007.

Thanks, Pittle, I will contact them, will see what they say.
Have you ever rented a car at Cancun airport ? If so, which company would you recommend ?

Thanks for all of the information regarding Cancun airport transportation. I'm going to try the public shuttle.

Mayan Palace Transportation

Pittle,

I just received an email from Mayan about the free transportation for our trip in January. You are supposed to email them at: conciergerm@mayanpalace.com.mx and include your airline, flight number, arrival time, and number of passengers.

Thanks for the info. I will do that. Last year I emailed to schedule transportation, but had to pay $15.00 per person. The great part was that they were waiting for us when we arrived. It will be even better to save $60 for the 4of us.

We're going there in March '07 and I definitely intend to inquire on this; thanks for the tip! Do you know if this is only airport-to-MP or does this include the return trip to the airport as well?

I've taken the public bus from the airport to the bus station in Cancun, it is cheap. On a vacation, first time or not, I'd reserve with one of prearranged van companies, we use Thomas More and I think it's $8.50 each to your hotel in the hotel zone.

I think you know there are no cabs at the airport, landing without a reservation for ground transport makes you realize you are in MX, since you're now in need of a service and have to arrange a ride on the spot. If you like dickering with the locals, feel free.

not so. There's are federally regulated taxi's and there are shared vans available to book on the spot. The ticket booth for the shared rides is near the exit. Cost is about $9pp one way.

The taxi cabs that take you to the airport are not allowed to pick up rides at the airport. Maybe defining just what a taxi cab is is difficult, but for example on this web site:

http://www.cancun.bz/cancuntips.htm

They put it as: Local taxis are not allowed to transport passengers from the airport, they can take you over there for your departure only.

This wasn't the case years ago, I'd guess 5 or so, but it's been my experience that it's the case now.

You can arrange/hire rides after landing, but seems an advantage to having it taken care of in advance, certainly a person's choice.
