Supermarket near Cancun airport

We arrive in Cancun 4/8 around 4pm and are renting a car. We'd like to stop on the way to Mayan Palace for a few supplies. Can anyone recommend a supermarket and/or liquor store on the way? I know there are plenty in Cancun and Playa del Carmen but we don't want to drive out of our way.

If there's nothing en route, is there a supermarket near the airport?

We don't need a Costco or Walmart, just someplace to pick up stuff for breakfast, snacks, sandwiches, etc. for a couple of days. Oh, and tequila & cerveza :D

Also, we're used to paying for everything with Visa -- but will we need cash for groceries/liquor? And if so, is USD ok, or will we need pesos?

Thanks!

grocery store

We just got back from the same trip. There is really nowhere to stop for groceries on that route. Your best bet is to go to Playa del Carmen. The store at the mayan is way too expensive...one lady I spoke with at the pool said a box of frosted flakes was $13 a box. We drove in to playa and turned on ave constitution and went to the brand new Mega store..Prices good.
We used pesos at the grocery...some of the best exchange rates are right at the airport.
We had a great week at the mayan..a beautiful resort with great rooms. Hated to come home

Take the bus to Playa Del Carmen for $2.00, tell the driver you want to go to the grocery and he will drop you off nearby. Take a taxi back for about $15.

You can catch the Playa Express just across the street from the front entrance. A shuttle will take you to the front gate from the lobby & if you bring your items back with you on the bus, they will call a shuttle to pick you up at the gate and take you back to the lobby.

doubledigit: thanks, but that's a bummer. We didn't want to have to drive to PDC for groceries the first night but looks like we'll need to afterall. Did you notice if the grocery store took plastic? We will plan to exchange some money at the airport then, thanks for that advice too.

pittle: thanks for the suggestions but we'll have a car so no need for a bus or taxi.

There is an ATM at the grocery and a Banamex down towards 5th Ave.

We always find we get the best exchange rates at ATM's. They all take USD and generally "plastic".

I edited my original question to see if anyone knows if there's a supermarket near the airport. We would prefer not to go into PDC the first night.

No supermarket near the Airport. Closest would be Cancun. There are some kwik stop markets in Puerto Morelos on the highway on the west side or southbound lane. That town is about 10 minutes away from the Mayan. It probably won't be much, but enough to tide you over until the next day when you can go into Playa do the superstore or Walmart. Everywhere I shopped in Playa took Plastic Walmart-Chedrui I think the big store all take credit cards.
There might be a larger store in the town of Puerto Morales which is off the highway. I don't recall seeing anything but small stores.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

We're off tomorrow morning (too early) and will probably go ahead and go to the supermarket in PDC, as long as our flight isn't late. DH was a bit concerned about driving in the dark to an unfamiliar area while being really tired, but most likely we'll just pass up the resort to get the groceries before we check in.
