I have an HGVC club points reservation commencing early November, so I am now in the 31 to 60 day window. I may have to cancel it. I did purchase cancellation protection at the time of booking.

I haven't had to do this before this close to the reservation. I just want to confirm my understanding that with the cancellation protection I can cancel right up to the reservation start date and my points used will be returned to my account? The only cost to me will be the loss of the reservation fee?

I believe that is correct. I have canceled a few times with this protection and always got my points back. Don't recall how close in my shortest time was, but so far the protection has worked. A few times we had something come up, and a couple of times I re-booked to take advantage of a sale.

from the rules:

Cancellation protection, if offered, allows a Member to cancel a reservation up to one day prior to
the confirmed check-in date with no loss of ClubPoints. Any transaction fees remain subject to
applicable cancellation policy.

You also will lose your cancellation protection fee.

@1Kflyerguy @GT75 Thanks to both of you. I had read the rules and that was my understanding, but since it is a 15-day reservation, there's enough points involved that I wanted to be certain. Good to know you've done it before and also good to clarify that it is up to one day before the check-in date.

And yes, the cancellation protection fee would also not be refunded. As that is a form of insurance premium, I would expect that, unless the cancellation was caused by HGVC. But it is good to point that out for any future readers in a similar situation.

Thanks everyone!!

I can confirm that you lose both the reservation fee and cancelation protection fee. Depending on the circumstances sometimes I pay for that again on a new reservation, other times I skip the protection on any new reservation..

I'm much the same. I usually opt for the cancellation protection when it is a more "expensive" (more points) booking, relative to the cost of the cancellation protection. It's also more likely when the reservation is made further out, and especially when it is closer to the end of a year where a change may not work as well.

As I get older, things can sometimes change quickly (such as medical issues for myself or family members) that can interfere with being able to realize the booking. Cancellation protection is a booking by booking decision for me. I'm glad this time that I did.
