I purchased 2 different wyndham resale points contracts. 189,000 expires june 30, 2011 and one 154,000 espires september 30, 2011. If I book a vacation using the 189,000 points and then cancell them does that extend the points into the next use year,

Can someone explain to me how the cancelled points process works?

thank you TUGer's this is a great site.

Hi Martha,

The answer to your question is no. Cancelling a reservation made using this year's points does not extend them into next year. There are only two ways to extend the life of your points. One is to put them in the points credit pool with Wyndham. It costs a small fee (like about $40) to do this BUT it has to be done BEFORE the use year begins. Once your use year has begun, the only way to extend the life of points you won't be able to use is to deposit them with RCI, where they will live on for another 2 years, but can only be used to book something through RCI. You can wait as late as the last day of your use year to deposit them to RCI. If you see something in RCI you want before that, just go ahead and deposit the points and book it. Otherwise, I would wait until a day or so before you use year ends to deposit because that way it extends the window as far as possible.

If I book a vacation using the 189,000 points and then cancell them does that extend the points into the next use year,
no, reserving and then cancelling a reservation does not extend the life of your points, but it can be useful for borrowing points from the next use year. Your points will expire unless you bank them with RCI.

Can someone explain to me how the cancelled points process works?
When a reservation is cancelled, the points will be returned to the account as cancelled points and will expire at the end of the current use year, even if it is a reservation using points from a future use year.

To expand on Siesta's post, if you borrow future year points in order to make a current year's reservation, they cease to become future year points and become current year points. So if you then cancel that reservation, they are cancelled points for the current year. But if you cancel a future year reservation that was made with future year points, those cancelled points are cancelled points for the use year of the reservation and cancellation.

By way of example, if I borrow 2012 points to make a 2011 reservation, as soon as I borrowed them, they became 2011 points. If I then cancel the reservation, they will be 2011 cancelled points. But if I make a reservation now for 2012 using 2012 points and later cancel that reservation, they will be 2012 cancelled points.

I had an interesting unpleasant surprise, I used this years points for a reservation next year. When I cancelled it, the points went back to my next years cancelled points and not the current year. When I talked to Wyndham about this, they explained then current year points are used to book a reservation in the next year time period, then it is cancelled. The points then revert to the next years cancelled points pool and not this years cancelled points pool. That unpleasant surprise caused me to do some jugling of reservations to make things right.
