We were heading to California this Saturday but a person we love passed on yesterday after a long illness. We have no clue if or when the funeral is going to take place and neither of us will ask. We have been going on so many trips lately that I didn't purchase any type of protections for this trip as it's a drive to destination. I figured out credits card has enough trip insurance. I looked and didn't see attending a funeral as being covered. We will certainly miss the first week is what I think. It's too late for a guest certificate is what I was told this morning.

Am I missing something ?

Thanks

Bill

Attending a funeral may not be a covered event but depending on the relationship, the death may be a covered event. That usually requires the death of a relative like a parent or child or someone who was going to be traveling with you. Based on what you've said, it sounds like that probably isn't the case. Thus you have to forego part of the trip to attend the funeral.

You said it was driving trip. Is it close enough you could drive back for the funeral once you know the arrangements?

It was my wife's sister and we will probably be hosting other family members needing a place to stay for what ever is planned. I'm certain this means we are in it for the long haul. The sister was suppose to go to Mexico and California with us but her health prevented it.

Were you going to stay at a Timeshare. If yes call and check into their policies for late cancelation.

I did call SFX. It was too late to add a guest certificate. If I cancel I just forfeit the first week so I'm not doing that is what I think. I think we will make the second week. Maybe , if things happen sooner than later we might make part of the first week but I kind of doubt it.

I will call the resort itself, thanks for the idea @geist1223

The death of a sister certainly would qualify to trigger cancellation coverage.

I always pay for travel with my Chase Sapphire Preferred card, which has cancellation coverage for a pretty good range of reasons. And we buy Allianz annual trip insurance, more for the medical benefits, but the minimum cancellation coverage is $2000 and it's only $400-ish per year. That's cheaper than individual coverage for two trips, usually.

I was looking at my Visa card and it does have coverage for these types of things so I might call to find out.

I always add trip insurance when we fly. I haven't for road trips.
