I was wondering if we can rent out reservations made thru our RCI points. The RCI points were accumulated from a combination of 2 different resorts and the reservation will be made in one of those resorts.

The simple answer is no according to RCI. If you get caught, they will revoke your membership and cancel the exchange you made, thus will result in some very unhappy renters. You can gift it to someone with a gift certificate.

What about my week at a points resort

My weeks have been converted to RCI points. I have withdrawn or reserved one of my own weeks at my home resort. Can I rent this week out or is this considered an exchange?

It is my understanding that you CAN rent out your own week at the resort you own. It is not considered an exchange, since the exchange company is not involved.

OIC.

When you gift to someone.... do you make reservation first then gift or have the gift recipient make the reservations themselves?

Clarification for the original poster.

Is they own at their home resort, and it is in points, I thought that they could rent this out.

Example: in my home points resort, can't I reserve the week and then rent for $$ ??

The other question: making the reservation first or last. It depends. With a friend or family member, you can find out what week they want. With a stranger, they might need you to reserve first and then convert it to a guest certificate for them.

Hope I have this right.

Hi Sandy,

RCI points coming from 2 resorts:
resort #1 has weeks and rci points annually
resort #2 flex nights even yrs and rci points odd yrs

resort # 2 is where I want to make reservations hopefully to rent out to help defer cost of MF's.

While I don't have RCI points currently, it was my understanding that you couldn't rent out anything reserved with RCI points.

The senario given above is something that could impact me, so this got my attention. Yesterday I emailed RCI to get some clarification on renting an unit at your own resort when you made the reservation with RCI Points. The advantage of this to us is that we own a 2 bedroom, but often only need a 1 bedroom. Therefore, we could reserve a 1 bedroom and still have some points left over for another exchange. This would benefit RCI because they would receive 2 exchange fees. If they reply that we can't downsize to a smaller unit and keep the remaining points for another time, then there is another reason to part ways with them. I'll post when they reply.

Yes, you can reserve a smaller unit and save some points for another trip. Renting your reserved week is a different story.

I own several RCI Points weeks, more than I can use, so I have sometimes tried to rent out a week that I had converted to Points.

Marge was asked several times whether one could rent out one's Home Week; at first she said that it was allowed, and then later she said the status of this was unclear.

Even if RCI permits you to rent out your Home Week, there is still a problem that your resort won't know that you have reserved your Home Week. Apparently, RCI doesn't bother to tell the resort that you have reserved your Home Week until two weeks before the check-in date. Therefore, the resort will probably be unwilling to issue any sort of confirmation in your renter's name. The best you would be able to give your renter would be an RCI guest certificate with their name on it. I had a renter (someone I found from TUG) back out because she felt this wasn't good enough; she wasn't confident that RCI would honor the rental.

If you own a floating week, rather than a fixed week, I imagine renting the week out gets even dicier, since it isn't clear which week your Home Week even is.

To my knowledge, you are not allowed to rent out other weeks at your Home Resort, only your Home Week.

Once again, RCI finds a way to stick it to their customers. I feel sorry for the folks who paid thousands of dollars for a Points conversion, since RCI keeps making the Points program less and less attractive. :(

In a bind renting a trade

I traded for a week in Salzberg & one in Germany this summer through II. I might not be able to afford to go. Why can't I get a guest certificate and solicit donation for one of the two weeks? How would II or RCI even know if the guest certificate was donated or purchased?

Technicalities will get you

You only get a guest certificate once you have a guest (you need to put a name on it).

I think that if you're soliciting 'donations' you need to be set up as a real charity (with proper tax filings and classifications, etc.) which is eligible to hold raffles and ask for donations.

RCI and II won't know if you've gotten any money for use of a unit with a guest certificate. They can 'guess' though if you start to advertise it for rental. That shows intent. Or the guest could be having a bad experience and they could call RCI or II and complain that they've paid 'good money' for these accommodations and aren't happy.

Just my thoughts.

Just wondering about your term "this summer",did you mean summer of 2008 ?
That makes a difference !
