I am considering calling II to deposit one of my Platinum weeks @ Marriott Ocean Pointe. It's the week of February 22, 2009. Can I ask for a week in May, 2009 at Ocean Pointe...week 18, 19 or 20...which is outside Platinum? I guess that would be Gold. How is a deposit of Platinum for Gold treated?...do I get something "extra" to represent the cost difference b/t Platinum & Gold?

Platinum, Gold etc only matters when reserving your own season at your own resort. It has nothing to do with II.

When making a request with II you can request any week you want regardless of what season Marriott considers your week. A platinum deposit that is requesting a gold week gets you nothing other than possibly a better chance to get your request if your week has higher trading power than the week you are requesting.

I have moved this to the Marriott forum because your post is about Marriott weeks.

You can request any week of the year when exchanging through II. However, it's generally best to include in your request as many weeks (and different resorts) as you are willing to accept so as to increase your chances of getting your requested exchange. Because you are exchanging a strong trading week, you should do fine, but you are still limited to what other owners happen to deposit with II.

II exchanges are on the basis of one week for one week. Thus, there is no compensation when you trade down, just as there is no additional cost if you trade up.

You can deposit your platinum for any week you are looking to get. Actually, it is the only way you can go during "gold" time since it is outside your season.

The only perk you might get is from II if your deposited week qualifies for a bonus week. This you would get (if it qualifies) whether you request a platinum week or a gold week.

"...there is no additional cost to trade up." So, why would anybody buy Platinum @ OP if you can pay a lot less for Silver or Gold & simply "trade up".
I am confused. And, cld somebody please tell me the "seasons" @ OP...is it Platinum, Silver, Gold? (in order of most expensive to least expensive)

1. Platinum (highest) - Xmas week through April
2. Gold - June, July, & August
3. Silver (lowest) - all of May, Sept. through first 2 weeks of December

Why buy platinum?
I own gold and just purchased a platinum week because I now find that I would like to go spring break or Easter week each year. When we first bought, we traveled always in the summer. In order to go OUT of your season, you must exchange through II. Even though you get preference as an OP owner, it is still dependent on what others deposit. Many at OP don't deposit their prime platinum weeks - they either use them or rent them. So, if you want to make SURE that you can go in the season that you want, it is best to buy THAT season. Also, I have been doing some trade tests since purchasing my platinum week and it is a slightly better trader than the gold.

Stated another way, if you own Platinum and want to stay at your resort in your season, all you have to do is call Marriott and make a reservation.

However, if you own Gold or Silver and want to stay in Platinum season, you have to (1) reserve your week with Marriott, (2) deposit the week with II, (3) request the Platinum week(s) you want to exchange into and (4) hope that there aren't too many other deposited weeks with stronger trading power than your week seeking the same weeks that you are. That last item can be very iffy. Then you might wait, wait, wait and wait some more, hoping that exchange comes through.

Thus, as suggested above, if you regularly want to stay in Platinum season, buy a Platinum week.

You can try to trade "up" anytime you wish, however there is no guarantee that you will be able to do so due to the trading power of the week you are depositing, or because of inventory availability of the week you desire.

With rare exception, it is much easier to trade "down".

Obtaining Platinum weeks at Ocean Points is difficult because many of the owners will owner occupy the resort and do generally do not deposit their weeks into the II system.

I think Ocean Pointe Platinum times are weeks 51, 52 and 1-17.

Gold runs weeks 18 thru late August.

Silver runs late August thru week 50.

So, I would be depositing w/ II my Platinum (week of Feb 22/09) for a Silver
week of May3, 10 or 17, 2009....right? Platinum for Silver.

That's correct. If that's what you want, go for it.

However, you might do better by renting your week to someone else and than paying a lesser amount to rent one of those May weeks.
