Can I cancel a last minute reservation and get my points back?

I made a last minute reservation a couple of hours ago for some friends in a very difficult situation. Check-in is today for two nights. They really only needed tomorrow night, but one night reservations are not allowed. They planned to check in tomorrow morning. If they change their mind, can I cancel the reservation and get my points back? I know I won't get the guest certificate back. It's Sunday night, so the Wyndham offices are closed. Just thought I would check with all the knowledgeable Wyndham folks on TUG to see if anyone has a definitive answer. Thanks so much for your help!

You are allowed to cancel a reservation on the day you make it, with no penalty, even if you are IN the cancellation period. I do not know how they refund transaction fees, as I do not pay for those. But you have to do it by the close of the business the day you booked it. Close of business for Wyndham is midnight EDT. So it might depend on where your live.

I do think that the Guest Cert is toast and lost however.

I would do it online, and it will tell you if you qualify for a refund or not.

Just found the answer on the Wyndham website:

Last-Minute Reservations
For a reservation made within 15 days or less prior to check-in, you have 24 hours to cancel your reservation without forfeiting your points.

For a reservation made the same day as check-in, you must cancel by 11:59 p.m. ET to avoid points forfeiture.

IF there are more rooms left, then I would cancel just before midnight, and wait until just after midnight and book another one, then you have all day tomorrow to figure it out. If there are no additional rooms left, or you are out of free reservations transactions, that that is a different story. You may not want to do that.

I do know you get your points back but I don't think you get your reservation transaction fee or GC fees back.

And you don't need to add the GC until you know for sure you are going to use the reservation.

If you didn't cancel the reservation yesterday, and plan to use it for only tonight, be sure to call the resort and let them know of the late arrival.

I believe the rule truly means the cancellation must occur within 24 hours of the reservation for it to be fully refunded and NOT within the same day (i.e. you are not limited to cancelling by midnight ET of the same day).

I can remember testing this out successfully on the day after making a reservation, yet within the 24 hour period.
