It's a phase (I hope) that I'm going through....

Okay, I know, I know................. buying a few toys now and that's something I've never really done in my life besides timeshares and antiques, however, I just bought something I've always wanted.

Now that I have a garage, I can buy a couple-few things that I could not have before. Also, their prices have been on a steady increase. I started thinking about them at at the $1200 range 5-10 years ago.

I've long admired vintage coke machines, so I bought one. It's being delievered next week. Was supposed to arrive today, but with the inclement weather, it had to be put off.

Anyway, I bought a Vendo 81D Coke machine (to go with my vintage grill - LOL). Even when I was a kid I liked the sound of that "roll-clunk" when you pulled out your glass bottle soda/tonic selection.

http://www.colamachines.com/machines/vendo/Vendo81/Vendo-81.htm

As a rule, I'm not one to splurge on things like this (I make my cars last an average of 12-13 years), but I thought "what the hell ?".

Do any of my fellow Tuggers have one of these or something similar ?

ETA: It will accept glass/plastic bottles of: beer, wine coolers, water, juice, soda/tonic. WIll have to fire up the vintage grill to go with a vintage-dispensed cold drink.

My timeshare addiction keeps me busy enough! But that is a very cool item - enjoy it

Yes, I share your addiction. With the impending loss of my dear Allen House, I've been searching more and more. Just waiting for a "deal".

I had a semi-vintage can soda machine, Vendo V-165, from the 70's that i used mostly for beer and some soda atleast 10 years ago, it was no where near a 'classic' or even in good shape, just a fun thing to have out back when you are just out of high school. The novelty ran out for it when my friends started brewing their own beers and got into kegging so ended up just giving it away at a garage sale.

It looked a lot like this:
http://www.pinballrebel.com/game/cola/vendo/vendo_165a/vendo_165a_a.jpg

I LOVE the look of the older 50's-60's vendo machines, they work just as well as a piece of decor as a working machine! Congrats on the buy and i hope you get many many many(3rd many because those are expensive) years of enjoyment out of it

ETA: I was walking around Costco the other day and i *think* i saw that they sell the older '8-10oz' glass bottles that fit perfectly in your vendo!

Very nice machine.

It looks like the one that was at the gas station where I had my morning papers dropped off. I started the day off with a bottle of Coke before delivering the papers.

They were small bottles but I can't remember if they were 6 or 8 Oz.

Once owned these: FirstFairway@Walden X 2; Lawai Beach; ManhattanClub; PuebloBonitoRose; 4 South Africa--now timeshare-free
We used to have one like this. We also had a vintage National cash register, wooden phone booth with working pay phone, barber chair, lamps made from old brass fire extinguishers, and a few smaller antique items. They all were in our family room and were fun to have. But, we sold all that stuff when we downsized and moved to Nevada.

I've always wanted a working one of these. I want the glass bottles, though. I can buy those bottled in Mexico, real sugar - non of that corn stuff, but each bottle is $1. at the cheapest grocery store around here. Between the cost of the sodas and running the machine, I'll likely never get one. Glad to see someone else gets to enjoy one, though.

Costco has cases of the cane sugar bottled Coke for about $19 a case of 24, I think? I just saw them two days ago. I was tempted to buy a case because I miss the real flavor of "pop" from my childhood. So delish!

WOW ! Thanks for that info. I found some at Hanscom AFB's commissary, but that cannot compete with your price.

Coke Machine

We have a Vendo 44 and finally a place to display it now that we built the new room.

Non-restored. Looks like this but has 10 Cents painted on it.

Thanks Rick and Cindy for the Costco info. Added: Costco has 9 and 12 oz, but ours needs smaller than that. DH has gotten some directly from the plant (he made up a name for his pretend bar) but they were a little big. We have 4 cases of empties from my daughter's college days. Her roommate's father (from KC area) did all the packaging for Coke. Don't know if they would refill them and probably too expensive but we need to check.

Lol, Beags, on your new collection. Vintage food-related paraphenalia, I love it.

Like the rest of us, I collect timeshares and currently have <gasp> 5ish. But one is EOY and two are small points DVC contracts so maybe its more like 3.

But my latest thing to "collect" is cycling equipment. I saw a nice-looking bike on the train the other day and struck up a conversation with the bike's owner. I'm sure he thought I was flirting with him but I was actually genuinely admiring his pedals.

I also collect Christmas ornaments made by a designer called Gladys Boalt. I don't know how many of these things I have at this point. I really want George Washington next year for Christmas. http://stores.boaltgallery.com/

I've got an Ideal 55 "slider" in my garage. It's 50's vintage and still works great. It was in my dad's bike shop, and I got it when he died. Below is not my machine (mine is original, unrestored, in a lighter blue), but this is what they look like:

ideal55pepsifront.jpg

These machines have the racks where the bottles hang by their necks and you slide them through a gate controlled by the coin mech. Mine takes nickels and dimes.

When I was six years old, there was a gas station around the corner that had one of those.

At the time we were living in Phoenix. We used to scour the shoulders or roads in the area, looking for empty soda bottles. We would bring them back to the store to collect the deposit - three cents each.

Doesn't sound like much, but remember the full bottle went for 10 cents. A full size snickers bar was 5 cents. You could get a baseball card, with a stick of bubble gum, for one cent.

Good question. I have a beater mtn bike, and a CF road bike (Giant TCR C2), but I seldom ride either due to time constraints. I'd actually like to get rid of both and just go with a flat bar roadie.

But I can fix 'em when they break. :)

Just curious ... do you now have to buy some of the old 6.5 oz. Coke bottles to fit into the machine?

I did the same thing in Denver. I collected bottles and took them to the local liquor store for free pop. It was actually pretty easy to find bottles in the alleys, near the incinerators. I used to get Duffy's Lime Rickey sometimes, but mostly Coca Cola and Dr. Pepper. Candy bars were a nickel, and they didn't change to 10 cents until I was about 18. It was double the price, but supposedly the bars were bigger. Not really.

My grandparents owned a little cafe in Denver, on Alameda Ave., between Newton and Osceola. It was called the Rose Cafe, and they had one of those machines with the sliders, but it was just what Grand-Pop used as a refrigerator for the soda.

I loved my Dr. Pepper with my burger at the restaurant, 10-2-4 in the bottle. I have never had a burger that good in my adult life. I think it was partly the Dr. Pepper. Plus, Grandma cut the fries fresh and used lard to fry them. So good! Five Guys does a pretty good job with the fries. I need to stay away from Five Guys.:ponder:

Here's what the seller/restorer said,"the Vendo 81 D will take 8, 10, 12 oz. bottles of soda/tonic, beer, water and juice bottles (glass and plastic)." Oh, long-necks, too !

When I lived in Sigma Chi in college we had a coke machine that was changed inside to take tokens that worked for several different brands of beer.

That was basicly what my machine was, fresh out of high school, i setup a vending machine in the backyard that i added a 'free vend' button to hidden in the back. It was great, for awhile i just showed a few close friends where the button was, But after awhile, i realized i kept filling the thing up every week(165 cans!) and there was no money in it!

This is something every boat owner can relate to. It is amazing how many friends one has when the gas tank and beer cooler are full and how few one has when the boat's outta gas, needs cleaned, and there is no beer.
