Heard a local news story tonight indicating that beginning in January 2018, Californians who fly will need to obtain a much more secure driver's license that will require the following:
  • Social Security Card
  • Birth Certificate
  • Two forms of documents proving you have a valid California address (such as utility bill)
  • You must apply at the DMV in person with each of these documents
Law goes into effect for all travelers nationally beginning October 1, 2020.

This moves California into compliance with a law passed by Congress in 2005. There are 25 other states not currently in compliance. Here is a map showing states in compliance (shown in green).

Florida's been a real-ID state for some time.
I recently renewed my DL online for another 8 years.
They used my same photo on file from 8 years ago.
... So by 2025, I'll look 16 years younger. :ponder:

Same thing in Colorado, only our renewal is every 10 years. Since we can renew once online, our pictures can be up to 20 years old!

It amazes me the number of states not in full compliance. Even more amazing is the states that are not compliant. It's not as if the dates for compliance has snuck up on them. I'm not trying to be political so let's keep it that way. im grateful that I live in a state that's in full compliance.

Well, just renewed my license (in person) last year so it looks like I will just use my passport for awhile. I think that my Global Entry card will work as well.

I don't mind the enhanced security, but the thought of spending quality time at the DMV again is not at the top of my to-do list.

My sister lives in New York since she was 22 years old. She is 56 years old and they DO NOT require a new updated picture when you renew your license.

How ridiculous is that for security ! Pretty much useless in my book

My CA license expires on 12/30/17. Last one was an auto renewal so I expect this one will require me to appear in person. Cliff renewed his last year in person, and my dad the year before. Both tried to make a DMV appt the same day the notice arrived, approx 1.5 months before licenses would expire, only to find the next available appt was a week or so past expiration. They both had to wait in line. I thought I'd be proactive and renew my license in late October. Either way I figure it is inevitable that the new license won't comply because the state won't have their act together yet. Luckily we have passports until they do.

Mine expires this year too. I wonder -- do you really need a Social Security card, or just your SSN? I haven't had a physical SS card for at least 30 years. Do I need to get SSA to send me a new one? I do have a Medicare card, which has the same number on it.

I think the bigger thing is that the requirements have been changing. States that had licenses that were good enough to use locally found themselves suddenly on the outside of newer requirements outside of their state. And because the Feds decided the initial issuance of licenses in those states didn't meet those newer requirements, it created the "out of compliance" issue. I never had a passport until I decided to take a vacation in Mexico about ten years ago - I didn't need one. Domestically, my driver's license was always good enough. Not so much anymore.

Now I have all sorts of ID, including a current driver's license, updated passport, a Nexus card, my retired military ID, a certified birth certificate, certified marriage license - you name it, I think I'm covered. But for some reason, they still ask for my ID at the pizza join when I use a credit card... ;)

As I wrote in a different thread, a U.S. Passport Card ($30 charge for U.S.Passport book holders) is VALID as a REAL ID for land/sea travel between USA and Mexico, Canada, many Caribbean countries, AND DOMESTIC air travel if your state issued ID (Driver's License) is not recognized as compliant with the REAL ID act.

My DL expires in a couple of months. I got notice that because it's a CDL I have to show my 'proof of citizenship' (passport) to renew it. I wonder if it, too will be compliant. We'll see.

And I thought you were going to tell us that they still ID you when you order a beer. Now that would have been a good story, Dave!

Where can I get one of those 10 year licenses? I just renewed my CO drivers license a couple months ago. It expires on my birthday in 2022 with a good driver online renewal option for an additional 5 years.

New Mexico just went to a two tier system. You can now get a "real ID" license or a driving authorization card. At this time I do not have a "real ID". I've been carrying my passport when traveling for years, but as of October, 2020 I'll need to get the "real ID". My current license, which was good for 8 years, expires in November, 2020.

Well, you can get a new card online -- start at https://www.ssa.gov/onlineservices/ -- or take your chance, stand in line, and argue with a DMV clerk.

I think though that KNOWING a person's SSN doesn't prove that you ARE that person, so better bring it.

I think I may get a passport card. It's a nicer experience. Wish I had gotten one last time I renewed my passport.

Instead of a passport, or in addition to a passport?

You'll need it in addition to your passport book. The card is not valid for international AIR travel, only land/sea (not by air) and just to/from Canada, Mexico and some (but not all) Caribbean destinations. Exceptions are Cuba, the French ones, like Martinique, St. Bartholome, and Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados.

In addition to a passport. To be used as a REAL ID when I fly domestically. Probably not necessarily, but "Texas has an extension for REAL ID enforcement, allowing Federal agencies to accept driver's licenses and identification cards from Texas through October 10, 2017."

My guess is Texas will apply for another extension because it doesn't sound as though they are close to having REAL ID compliant drivers licenses. Could you imagine the chaos if TSA said "sorry we don't accept Texas drivers licenses anymore." I doubt that will happen. However, I also don't want to have to go to the DPS office if and when the new licenses become available. I can easily get a passport card via the mail. Passport card is $30, Texas drivers license is $25.

But, if you are still going to have a passport, why the card in addition? Is it that you'd rather carry a card instead of a passport when you travel domestically?

I just use my passport.

When I travel domestically I do not want to take my passport with me, and I definitely don't want to have to carry it around all day.

In my daily life and even when I travel, my purse is a very small and slender fanny pack. All I carry is my drivers license, health insurance card, couple of credit cards, 2 keys, and cell phone. A passport wouldn't fit even by itself.

When I travel internationally I have a smaller size Pacsafe sling bag because I have to carry 4 passports (self, husband, 2 kids). I actually have passport cards for my kids since it's the only ID I have for them and I don't want to travel with their birth certificates. Plus I always thought it was odd that I could get on a plane with my kids without having to prove that they were mine.

Valid answer. I'm just trying to figure out why you'd want to shell out more money for something that is basically a duplicate.

Well it's either $30 for a new passport card or $$ for a new purse :)

Hmm, I'll have to ask dh where he carries his passport when traveling. I know he doesn't use a purse. ;)
