It looks like California declared a [precautionary] state of emergency because of bird flu. Is there a bird flu problem in California ? From what I read there hasn't been any humans infected. Looking on page three it does order citizens to obey officials. Does this mean they can activate pandemic procedures ?

[…] federal officials confirmed the first U.S. case of severe illness in a hospitalized Louisiana patient — a concerning development as the virus continues to spread throughout the nation via migrating birds.

So what does the declaration mean to travelers ? I'm wondering what activate pandemic procedures actually is. Is it just clerical readiness or are they going full blown masking and all that.

"According to the CDC, 61 people have acquired the virus since March — the vast majority at dairies or commercial poultry operations. Most suffered from mild illness, including conjunctivitis, or pink eye, and upper respiratory irritation. In California, 34 people have become infected with H5N1, with all but one contracting the virus from infected dairy. The outlier was a child in Alameda County; the source of that infection has not been determined. There was also a suspected case in a child from Marin County who drank raw milk known to be infected with the virus. The CDC was unable to confirm illness in that child."

I don't think this will justify masking and lockdowns, but who knows what will happen these days. This is another illustration why using science to improve our food safety isn't a bad thing. I will stick to drinking pasteurized milk and eating 'traditional' eggs.

How will this affect your travel plans - if you are planning to stay in California, or are merely changing planes in a California airport?

Are there any travel restrictions yet?

I am in California. I was surprised to hear the announcement. AFAIK I don't think this means broad restrictions. So far I haven't seen any changes and most people go to stores and venues without masks. It is business as usual.

It may affect poultry and beef workers and health worker protocols for those who could be exposed in rural areas.

More of an impact if you plan to visit a farm.

Here is an article summarizing the known information on Bird Flu
With California's population density in Southern California, an outbreak could spread like wildfire
The presence of the virus is known
Hopefully it does not become a problem
In my opinion, being prepared is better than not being prepared

Let's all calm down: There are NO restrictions, unless you want to milk cows, or you are a cow or a chicken.

This is simply a precautionary step, to be prepared for an uncertain future:

“This proclamation is a targeted action to ensure government agencies have the resources and flexibility they need to respond quickly to this outbreak,” Newsom said in a statement. “While the risk to the public remains low, we will continue to take all necessary steps to prevent the spread of this virus.”

I don't know of any restrictions. I do remember a time where our California trip was so restricted we left and went to Lake Havasu. We have two trips planned for Southern California with one of the trips being a large group of family heading to Disneyland where restrictions would ruin the trip. I still have time to cancel the Anaheim trip. The other trip is one that we are stuck with but the destination has many outdoor opportunities so restrictions would be tolerable.

The articles about this seem to suggest the declaration is preparatory but the orders does give authority to emergency officials who residents of California are ordered to obey.

The other interesting tidbit is former CDC Director Robert Redfield said in an interview in 2022 that Bird Flu is a pandemic risk with a 25% - 50% mortality rate which is significantly higher than ,.06 mortality rate of the last pandemic.

Good question - maybe the cows and chickens are operating the drones??? Maybe they are spreading the H5N1 flu with the DRONES!!!

Yep, that is the story I'm going with! :ROFLMAO:

I think there are over 100,000 dairy cows and maybe 250,000 beef cows in our area. I read that in the last few years we have had 24 area cow test positive for h5n1 avian flu and only 1 this year . H5n1 has a high mortality rate in humans but is consider a low risk disease at this time. If Redfield was right about mortality rates, the 34 people infected in California would result with between 8 - 16 deaths.

Bill - I have a fantastic financial opportunity for you! (BTW, I want a 10% consultant fee for this.) You should contact the cows to see if they would like to purchase your leftover stock of horse medicine. I mean, it works for horses, so why not cows!!!

I live in California, and the most significant impact has been an egg shortage at the grocery store. I believe 2.5 million egg-laying hens in California have died since early November. There has been very little inventory at the stores in the past few weeks. Since eggs and dairy are reasonably sizable industries in Ca, it makes sense to try to protect those if possible.

An 18 pack was about $7 at Winco today (a discount grocery store) and some stores will only let you buy 1 cartoon of eggs.

Buying tip: If you find a good price on eggs and want to buy a few cartons, they freeze well. Just break them into a bowl, mix well, and freeze in ice cube trays - then put the cubes in a zipper bag in the freezer when solid. About 2 eggs will fit in each cube, but check your own ice cube tray to be sure. To use: take out as many as you need, thaw in the refrigerator and use for cooking as usual. Please note - they don't freeze well unless you mix the egg and yolk, so this won't work for eggs-over-easy, but good for scrambles and baking.

It must be a regional thing. No shortage of dairy or eggs in our area. The h5n1 hasn't really come up as an emergency in Washington but that could change even though I doubt it.

This thread has been closed, and some inappropriate posts have been removed. I wish I had followed my first instinct and closed it at the very beginning. The original post was click-bait, designed to imply that California was about to go into lock-down. The responses show that several people bought into it. Nothing could be further from the truth. I, for one, had enough of this baloney on TUG during the early pandemic, and I'm not going there again. TUG is not the place for your dog whistles, politics, and conspiracy theories. There are plenty of other places where you can deep dive into this stuff - TUG is not the place.
