Buying fresh fish directly from fishermen possible? (Maui)

I’m headed to Maui for the 1st time 1 week today. Just wondering, is it possible to buy fresh fish directly from local fishermen in Maui?

If you’re lucky you can score some fish for $5/pound at either the Lahaina or Maalaea harbours in the afternoon between 2-3pm, when the afternoon boats come in. Also, the local fish markets usually charge 3x the price for fresh fish.

Really looking forward to Maui, but I’m on a tight budget, so I’m avoiding expensive restaurants on this trip. With Maui being on the ocean though, don’t want to sacrifice eating fresh fantastic seafood, and I love preparing and cooking fish myself

Most of the fishing charter boats in Hawaii are fish greedy meaning all the fish caught belong to them. If you catch a nice tuna they might give you a small piece but they sell the fish to businesses that sell to the public for the most part. Most of the sport fishers do not have the required license to sell fish so most of these guys will not sell fish to anyone. You could just show up and ask but I kind of doubt they will sell the fish for anything less than the store.

You can catch fish off the shores in many places if you like small trevally ( papio) , goats and snapper. Some of the trevally ( ulua ) get really big. I had one break my rod on a trip years ago. The trick is to find sandy areas between rocky areas or take a kayak out near the reef.

I can appreciate your thoughts, but you are at a disadvantage. The markets and restaurants have already negotiated with the commercial fisherman for their catch, and the private fisherfolk are catching for themselves. You're certainly welcome to walk the docks of Lahaina or Maalaea and perhaps get lucky, but realize that you are at a disadvantage- AND you're taking way valuable Hawaiian vacation time to do it.

It never hurts to check Foodland. I don’t know if it is the same on Maui. But in my Foodland, I see locally caught Ahi from time to time at 8 bucks a pound. This is the kind you can eat raw.

Yeah, the local MAUI Foodland seems to be a bit more pricey with their Ahi.

I still say that Costco has the best fish prices--by a bunch--on Maui. On Kauai, the fish prices aren't that bad compared. Depends on the store of course (sorry P-ville). Costco and Safeway have decent prices considering.

Oahu definitely has much greater supply of fish. Prices at the supermarket can vary depending on whether there is excess supply. So good grade Ahi can fluctuate from $7.99 to $17.99 at the grocery store. Times and Foodland are most likely to sell locally sourced fish. Costco is consistent quality, but never has the price drops. And the Costco fish may have been caught thousands of miles away.

Last visit to Maui I saw plenty of moa. Maybe the op can catch one and have huli huli moa, lol. I think moa is mo better huli huli.
