Hi gurus!

I currently own a deeded Vegas grand chateau week which I have enrolled in the Marriott exchange to use as Marriott vacation club points. I am looking at buying more points to be able to get access to more inventory through the trust as opposed to only being limited to the exchange. If I buy aftermarket points, will my grand chateau points qualify for the trust along with the newly purchased points? Will I be able to combine both points for a status? Any restrictions that I should be aware of? I appreciate the help!

Yes, you can buy resale points for "X" amount of dollars, and then pay an additional fee of $3 per point which basically makes them just like points purchased directly from Marriott.

Marriott appears to be exercising their Right of First Refusal on points which are selling for less than $3.50 to $4.00 per point so you likely would need to offer at least $3.50 per point if you have any hope in having it survive the ROFR process.

My suggestion is to try and find resale points which run during a calendar year, i.e. Jan.1 thru Dec. 31. There are plenty of resale points out there that don't run during a calendar year and personally I would avoid considering those if I were in the market to buy resale points. It's just easier to remember the calendar year all the time.

One other option for you is to forget the points game and buy a desirable resale lock off week instead. Granted you won't have the flexibility of points but Interval International would be who you would use to obtain exchanges into other Resort and by using the lock off you would get the chance to swap two exchanges per year. It would also likely be at a lower annual cost.

To get an idea what resale points and resale weeks sell for (which pass ROFR) check out this website below:

Thanks. So to confirm, my existing chateau points in the exchange plus the points I purchased will all qualify for the trust? Will I achieve any status changes with aftermarket points purchases? Any other restrictions in aftermarket points?

It’s a very common sales LIE that owning trust points gives you access to more inventory.

Only buy more points if you need more points to use. You won’t gain some magic access to additional inventory with trust points- no matter what sales tries to tell you!

Your additional purchased points will not be "super charged" to access solely Trust properties. They will increase your status only if you reach the amount needed in which to change your current status level. Your current points from the Marriott Grand Chateau should provide access to any Trust property (assuming you have enough points in which to make a reservation).

No. Purchasing Club/Trust Points does not "supercharge" Exchange Club Points from enrolled/elected Weeks. Exchange Points can only be used to book intervals in the DC Exchange Company; Trust Points can be used to book intervals in the DC Trust and the DC Exchange Company. But the reality is, at any given time the majority of intervals are made available through the Exchange Company when booking windows open, excepting only a few high-demand intervals that may be held back in the Trust for a limited time. (There's no way to determine which high-demand intervals might get held back or when they'll be released to the EC, so it's good practice to keep checking availability after the windows are open.)

Yes, status updates occur with every Trust Points purchase regardless of whether they're purchased direct or on the resale market, and DC status is based on the total amount of Trust and Exchange Points for which a member is eligible.

I think the docs say that external resale Trust Points can't be converted to Bonvoy Points (like how external resale Weeks have always worked) but I can't recall if that's ever been tested by someone on TUG.

Thanks. Where can I find Marriott documentation on limitations of aftermarket

I was told in a sales presentation that resale points do not contribute to status (ie., Chairman). I think that is a lie (assuming that you also purchase the repatriation fee from Marriott for the purchased points), but correct me if I am wrong.

It's a lie. You are correct.
