I am buying a unit at the Westin Kanapaali as a resale. Questions,,,whom do I use to do the escrow...anything I need to watch out for in particular to prevent myself from getting screwed on this..? Thanks
Use a title company or attorney familiar with the resort that has handled closings there in the past. I'd also recommend you pay for a title search. Finally, be aware some closing agents have been experiencing huge delays with Hawaii closings, so ask up front about expected timelines.
If you want a few referrals, send me a private message.
Old Republic Title and Escrow of Hawaii, Pacific Guardian Center, 733 Bishop Street, Suite 2700, Honolulu, HI 96813
is the one I have listed from my buying of WKORV thru a broker who reads TUG (Syed Sarmad. Advantage Vacation LLC. Phone 800-775-4493)
There is also Island Title (no address).
btw - 5 months would be way too long with a Title Company that has their act together - ours happened in about 4-6 weeks (Jan 2005)
No way it should take 5 months, ours took 1 1/2.
Taking ownership in the Starwood system does not take that long in my experience but getting the recorded deed from the state of Hawaii takes a long time. There is nothing you need the deed for anyway, unless you plan to sell right away, so not really a big deal IMO.
Actually, the deed must be recorded and sent to Starwood before Starwood will recognize you as the new owner. There are instructions in Owner Resources to send the recorded deed to Starwood yourself.
Jose Pagan (SVO Title Star) had me in their system and on MSC in a matter of hours - I hope SVO did not find him so competent that they got rid of him...

On March 25th, someone else responded to my email when I sent them my SVR deed:
Anaberta Ubiles (Annie)
Title Coordinator
Starwood Vacation Ownership
I don't know if this is a change, or they have more than one title coordinator?
I meant that the long delay was receiving a hard copy of our deed from Hawaii after it had been recorded. It seemed to take many, many months though, as you say, it must have been recorded since Starwood transferred ownership to us much earlier.
