Being in IT for over 30 years, I have closet full of old hardware that I no longer use. Part of that are a bunch of hard disk drives which are functional, but I hesitate to dispose because the data can be recovered off them. There are techniques which can be used to "wipe" the drive, but they are time consuming and to do on a one on one basis just was not high on my "to do" list.
Now that I'm retired, I've been puttering around with multiple Linux distro's and I came across home-brew NAS (Network Attached Storage) with surplus parts.
I have a Synology NAS, so I have quite of experience with the technology, so I thought it would be fun to build a Franken-NAS from my "parts closet".
I tried out RockStor in a virtual environment and I was quite impressed. I'm using an old Xeon motherboard from an abandoned gaming system as the base. I will use my old drives and use encrypted file systems with Raid0 which will stripe data across all the drives which will also be encrypted, so after a fer months of playing, the drives will be effectively wiped and then I can donate them.
