Sorry, this is going to be long. This is my first post but I have used the site to assist in understanding my in-laws Wyndham ownership (multiple developer purchanses) and then to learn more about resale and options as I consider our own purchase. Fortunately, they were able to use Certified Exit and received a nice lump sum, much better than resale, for their Club Wyndham Access contract. They allowed my wife and I used their Wyndham points for our annual family vacations and we have been considering our own resale purchase to provide the same opportunities for us and our children now that we do not have their points to use.

Now to the Mexico portion: my in-laws also have Mexico timeshares at Buganvilias PV that they used to PIC into Wyndham, which got them to Platinum, and Vidanta (they stopped paying Vidanta and I do not know her ownership). My FIL passed away a couple of years ago and they had already stopped travelling and have not gone to Mexico in over ten years. They bought each of the three times they went so probably a good thing they stopped going.

My wife and I are considering "taking over" payment of the MFs at Buganvilias as a way to help her and to get us into timesharing. My prefernce was Wyndham based on our prior experiences but this would be an easy entry and the MFs seem reasonable. We stayed there five years ago and really enjoyed the resort, location and PV.

Here is what my MIL has with Buganvilias:
  • 16 floating weeks remaining for the one bedroom and studio lock-off (blackout for Easter and weeks 51 & 52)
  • 10 bonus weeks for the above
  • 6 weeks remaining on Even Years for a hotel room (May-Oct)
My first thought once I learned these details was to bank the contract weeks and and only use the bonus weeks for staying at the resort. We are on the East coast so flights to PV are on the high end and we do not see PV as an annual trip as we like to explore different places like we did through Wyndham (never vacationed in the same state twice). They have always been members of RCI due to Wyndham but I have read in the forums that II may be better overall, but I have no experience with II and only a little with RCI.

Exchanging is brand new to me so I am hoping someone here can provide a little insight into what we would get with RCI for the above, and II as well. She does not have anything banked at the moment so I cannot 'see' the options in RCI (she let her RCI lapse while she was taking care of my FIL). I just paid for her RCI renewal and we spoke to Buganvilias yesterday and requested that they resubmit what she banked in 2022. It sounded like they will as they had a note in their system that the deposit was cancelled by RCI due to lack of membership but Buganvilias never informed her.

One last thing at the moment. I believe the bonus weeks can only be used at Buganvilias, which makes sense. Is there anything else I should know about using them?

Thank you,

Bob

I've owned at Buganvilias for a several years, so will address your bonus weeks first. Bonus weeks actually work very well at Buganvilias. Yes you can only use them at Buganvilias, but there are no limitations on when you can reserve or what week you can reserve. You can reserve a week a year in the future and just pay the maintenance fee for that year. i.e., if you want to reserve a week in 2025, you would pay the maintenance fee determined for 2025. As far as exchanging with RCI, I haven't used RCI for a few years as I got tired of the ever increasing fees, but I typically didn't find most Mexico resorts to trade well. You may do better renting your week on a Sheraton Buganvilias forum or here on TUG. Or you could consider selling the week for a small amount or just selling for the transfer fee and maybe the buyer would let you rent back occasionally. As it sounds like you don't plan to go often.

Thanks for the reply. I think you are right if it does not trade well into RCI, which would be our primary use. I will see what happens with the potential xchange, hopefully we hear today, and will re-evaluate.
