Another was Bob Hoover who escaped from a German POW Camp and flew a damaged FW-190 from Germany to Holland where he crash landed to avoid being shot down by friendlies.

Hoover was also the Chase Pilot for Chuck Yeager when Yeager broke the sound barrier. He also became a renowned Air Show pilot famously looping his twin engine plane after he shut down both engines and then landing dead stick, restarting the engines and taxiing back.
