Brian Wilson, Beach Boys Co-Founder, Dies at 82

RIP!

I’m ashamed to say that I didn’t recognize how talented and innovative Brian Wilson and his band, The Beach Boys, were at the time. I was 9-10 years old when they and The Beatles rose to fame. I was a Beatles fan. I liked The Beach Boys songs but quickly tired of their AM top forty radio hits since they all sounded alike. Surfing music. The Beatles played serious music and wrote meaningful songs. That’s how I felt back then.

It’s probably been less than 10 years ago that I actually listened to the entire Pet Sounds album for the first time, so, around age 60. It is a great album! Why had I waited so long? I had the same experience with The Carpenters. At the time, I thought they just did silly pop music songs. I cheated myself out of listening to some really good, cool music for a long time.

Brian had a very successful, but also very hard journey through life, often dealing with debilitating depression. I hope he has found peace at last!

Me too, though I confess I really liked the Beach Boys sound. My favorites through that time were Fun Fun Fun, Help Me Rhonda, Barbara Ann, Sloop John B, California Girls.

It wasn't until I was in my 50s that I learned that there had actually been a huge "rivalry" between the Beatles and The Beach Boys, and that Pet Sounds was a Brian Wilson rejoinder to the Beatles.

R.I.P. Brian Wilson. The Beach Boys used to played at The Peppermint Lounge in VA Beavh, VA years ago.

they all sounded alike
LOL. I could name a long list of greats that I have heard people say that about. My 2 thoughts usually are:
a) SMH if that is all they have to say
b) and, IF it were true, what is wrong with that? Is there some logic to disliking everything because "it is all the same"? No. Explain why you fundamentally dislike the first thing, apart from the rest. Then explain why all the rest is "the same". Until they do the first part, they got nothing.

I listened to Endless Summer 2 weeks ago. That takes you back.

Ronnie's favorite artist of all time (Ronnie Montrose). He was beyond thrilled to meet Brian and play with him about 15 years ago. He told Rick it was the greatest thrill of his life to meet Brian Wilson. May they both rest in peace.

The musical arrangements within Pet Sounds were so complex, Brian hired out the music to be performed by studio musicians, informally known as the Wrecking Crew, in order to be able to complete the album in a reasonable amount of time.

Good Vibrations was also supposed to be part of Pet Sounds, but production delays with the Theremin music caused it to be released later.

The production costs of Pet Sounds/Good Vibrations were so over the top, the record label redid their contract to reduce their exposure on production costs.

It wasn't until I was in my 50s that I learned that there had actually been a huge "rivalry" between the Beatles and The Beach Boys, and that Pet Sounds was a Brian Wilson rejoinder to the Beatles.
First was Rubber Soul, then Pet Sounds was a clap-back and was the Beatles wake up call. Lennon heard it and then started toking on Sergent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band as the rejoinder.

At the time, and for a long time afterwards, I only read about how The Beatles didn't respect The Beach Boys music and vice versa. Now, I read sometimes that Paul says they were actually friends and would visit occasionally. I don't really know what to believe. Suffice to say, both bands were exceptional, with extremely creative musicians and songwriters in both. Lennon & McCartney were two of the greatest songwriters of all time and The Beatle's activism awakened a generation of young people, turning them into activists for socio-political change around the world. I don't believe The Beach Boys had that kind of effect but they were great entertainers who had a huge worldwide following for several decades. I now realize that should be enough to earn my respect, but I also realize Brian Wilson was so much more.

The Beach Boys are playing in Williamsburg, Va. this month. I think there are two original band member left
(I've heard one just pretends to play his guitar)

RIP Brian. Thanks for all the great music.

I like most music but some music is more complicated than others. I like both. Alot of the Beach Boy's music isn't very complicated and like a lot of music, the use of 3 chords is all that is required for many songs. There isn't a thing wrong with liking or dislike music because it sounds the same, imo.

My brother was into the Beach Boys & Beatles sound, so to be different, I chose the Animals , Guess Who, Steppenwolf and groups like this, but I like it all.

Little Duce Coup showed up on my work out playlist yesterday.

I liked their early songs for fun at parties, but Pet Sounds totally changed my impressions for the band. I didn't really like Pink Floyd when I was in college, but 'Comfortably Numb' is now probably one of my top five favorite songs. Their Dark Side Of the Moon and Kansas Song for America albums also were masterpieces that clearly illustrated the writing and musical talents of those bands. Pet Sounds, Dark Side of Moon, and Song For America all require serious listening to appreciate their complexities.

I was fortunate to see Brain Wilson and his band a few years ago in Cincinnati at the Taft theater. My brother and I went to see the Zombies and didn't realize that Brian Wilson was the other band. His band was great, even though he was very subdued and only sang on a few songs. I'd forgotten how many songs they had, but my favorite is still Sloop John B.

I hav tickets to a concert in Sept for what's left of the Beach Boys. I'll be glad to hear the songs live one more time before I join Brian and the others.

Had the privilege of seeing Brian, Paul Simon and unscheduled walk-in Paul McCartney play together at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles many years ago. It was a concert thrill of a lifetime. RIP Brian, and thanks for all the wonderful music.

We saw Brian Wilson with Jeff Beck a few years ago. I saw The Beach Boys at the Strawberry Festival last year. Only Mike Love was left in the band. His son was in the band too. Not the same without the Wilson brothers but the music will live on.
