Starting to make plans for our end-of-July trip to Breezy Shores Resort & Beach Club at Detroit Lakes, Minnetsota. What is there to see and do in the area?

We have never been in the state of Minnesota (North Dakota or South Dakota either for that matter) and don't have clue. The reason for our trip is that my husband has this need? to be in all 50 states and we have almost completed them. Anyway, it would sure be nice if someone would let us in on what to see and do in the area.

We will probably fly into Fargo, North Dakota and pick up a rental car for the week. Thanks in advance for any suggestions and/or opinions.

Most vacationers in Detroit Lakes come to enjoy the many lakes in the area with activities like boating, swimming and fishing. It's a quiet smaller town and it does have a nice grocery store. (I've got relatives who have retired to a log cabin near there.)

It's about a 4 hour drive from the Minneapolis airport (and less than an hour from Fargo), so you could consider flying into MSP if the fare is too high into Fargo.

It's a pretty area to just drive around, to see the different lakes, the countryside and the nearby small towns.

The Tamarac national wildlife refuge is just north of Detroit Lakes and offers the chance to see lots of birds, including eagles and trumpeter swans, hiking, etc., It encompases the many different kinds of terrain - from bogs and lakes to forrest - in the area. More info on their website:

A couple of things to try in the area:

There's an interesting museum to visit for a few hours in in Moorhead, MN called the Hjemkomst Center. It was originally built to house a replica of a Viking boat built by a local man fascinated by the legends of the Viking explorers. He built it himself in a potato warehouse, and died before it could be launched. His young-adult kids decided to follow his dream, taught themselves how to sail and took the small boat from Lake Superior, through the chain of Great Lakes and sailed it across the Atlantic to Norway. Quite an adventure for a family that grew up in land-locked Minnesota! The boat is interesting to see (I wouldn't want to cross the Atlantic on it!) and the rest of the museum has traveling exhibits usually about the heritage of the area. It's the 25th anniversary, so I think there may be some special exhibits. It's an attractive building that's reminiscent of giant sails. There's also a replica of a Norwegian Stave church built on the grounds.
Here's the website link:

Another interesting stop in Moorhead is the Comstock House, a restored home from an early pioneer who helped build the railroad throught the area.

If you plan for a leisurely restful visit, you'll enjoy the area.

I grew up not more than 40 miles from there. Beautiful area. I would love to live back there, but not too many high-tech opportunities there... :(

Itasca State Park (headwaters of the Mississippi River) would be a nice day trip (about 70 miles). You can wade (but not quite jump!) across the Mighty Mississippi.

If you are into meeting the locals, I would suggest have a few lunches / dinners at some of the local "lake lodges" -- there are dozens of lakes within 20 miles of Detroit Lakes ("DL" to the locals), and there are some really good family-owned "lodges" / restaurants that are worth the visit. Ask some locals for suggestions. And you must try some fresh walleye while you are there! :whoopie:

And don't make too much fun of the Minnesotan accent (I still slip back into it when I am back there). :D

hello!!

I will tell you of what we found at this resort...If you are NOT staying in the lake front units, change your resort NOW!!! The off the lake units are beat ,old, 2-bedroom apartments, with NO view,(except a parking lot). You are samwitched between a loud all night disco, and a freight train, running through your place several times a night. The area is sparse ,on things to do.The lake units are the same buildings, only RIGHT on the lake.(a saving grace) We stayed about hmmm 3 hours, called rci.demanded our week put back into the pool.I kid you not...sorry sally

Sally--

What was your unit number? How can I tell if I am lakefront or not? Were you there on an exchange? How long ago were you there? How far is the closest grocery store, should I pick up groceries before leaving Fargo? How well equipped was the kitchen? Can I bake cookies or a roast?

As you can tell, I am full of questions. Thanks!

call the resort for location of unit...

We were there 3 years ago...full kitchen...I think you could make the best of it ,if you had to.But...this resort had a gold crown, witch it did not near deserve. The lake is nice, but there was not a lot to do in the area in my opinion. the people next door did not sleep because of the disco, and trains. I do not know about grocery....as we ended up at a nice waterpark hotel in Brainerd, much nicer area.

I did, indeed, call the resort directly and they confirmed that we had a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, lakefront unit. This is primarily a relaxing, getaway from it all vacation and so I guess we'll take it and hope for the best. Thanks for your imput.

I don't think you'd need to buy groceries in Fargo/Moorhead. My relatives who leave near DL have said that their local grocery is as good as the best grocery store in Fargo/Moorhead, Hornbacher's. They used to live in Moorhead and still go there weekly for church and other activities, but don't think it's necessary to buy groceries there. I'm afraid I don't recall the name of the grocery they like in DL.

We were there several years ago and had a great time. Spent a week at another DL resort last summer. No problem with groceries, there's a well stocked supermarket in town as well as some farmers market type vendors for very fresh produce. Pick up a cheap fishing outfit, and catch lots of small sunfish from the shore in front of the resort, or take a trip with one of the guidfes in the area for more serious sport. We saw a fellow last year bring in a 48" muskie to show the family. Unfortunately, he was out of the water too long and didn't survive, a real shame, as he did all he could to revive it for release.
