Bought an iPhone 3Gs. Anyone get tethering to work?

I have a friend who jailbroke his 3G (no S) and has tethering now! No need for the 3G S (if tethering is your only need). No waiting for ATT. Pretty cool.

There are 2 ways to get tethering now, before AT&T rolls it out. (ok, actually, only 1 method for the 3gs right now.)

I would try method 1 first.

1. On your iphone, open safari, and go to help.benm.at and download a configuration for tethering with AT&T. This method does not require an app, just the updated profiles you download from help.benm.at. You get tethering over bluetooth and usb cable.

2. jailbreak it and use pdanet. But the jailbreak for the 3gs isn't ready yet, and the dev team said today they have it, but they are waiting to see what Apple does when they release OS 3.0.1, which they think will happen relatively soon. The jailbreak is available for the first gen and 3g iphone (and ipod touch) at this point. Jailbreak is very easy to do. pdanet is a paid app, through the cydia app store (you get the cydia app when you jailbreak your iphone). With pdanet you get tethering over the usb cable and wifi (it can turn your iphone into a wifi router). You run the pdanet app to get tethering.

So, at this point, you only have option 1, since you have a 3GS. Tummy posted about this on FT's travel tech board. He/she uses it. I don't have a 3gs. For that matter, I don't have an iphone, but I did jailbreak and unlocked my friends iphone 3g for her, and played with it for about a week before I sent it back, yesterday. It worked fine with my t-mobile 2 go sim after I unlocked it. You have to jailbreak first to unlock it.

Boca, do you have an old 3g you want to part with? PM me.

Edit to add: I haven't heard anything about the method Richard posted. I think the benm.at method is probably better. Nothing to restore with that one. You can always do a restore to the original 3.0 firmware if it's a problem. You know where to find the 3.0 firmware, right? Don't forget to backup your iphone in itunes before messing around with it, just in case you need to do an OS restore.

Another edit: You aren't going to damage your iphone with any of these. AT&T could theoretically charge you if they notice you are tethering, I suppose. They intend to charge extra for tethering when they roll it out, as far as I've heard. Even if you were to jailbreak it, you could always restore back the unmodified 3.0 firmware you downloaded when you did the jailbreak. And don't upgrade to 3.0.1 when it comes out if you ever intend to jailbreak (and optionally unlock it), until the dev team announces that they can do it with 3.0.1. Most of that is moot for you at this point anyway.

David,
I have a 3G that I'd like to tether but everything you've stated is Greek to me. Joe

you don't understand how to open the safari web browser on your iphone and type in the web site address help.benm.at?

I hope that doesn't come off as condescending. I didn't mean for it to be condescending.

You can ignore everything else I wrote. If this is all too confusing, you might consider waiting until AT&T offers it later in the year.

If there's any specific thing you don't understand about the help.benm.at method, just ask, and I'll try to answer to the best of my ability. Just understand that I haven't actually done it myself.

thanks David, I just wanted to make sure I could restore it to factory settings. I figure as long as a user doesn't download a lot of data that it would be hard for AT&T to figure out you have a tethered laptop.

I do not have another iPhone. This was my first and I love it.

The Hacks I've seen are pretty easy, especially since tethering is built into the operating system. Actually, they aren't even hacks. They are technically features.

Baloney, if you hadn't meant it that way you would have never said it in the first place.

Just a warning to play nice. Let's not let this informative thread degenerate into a sandbox standoff.

I would wait until AT&T offers the tethering feature before trying one of these hacks. You could seriously ruin your phone or have the carrier cancel your account if you try stuff that isn't supported.

Doing non supported stuff is like buying a timeshare on eBay. Don't do it unless you know what you are doing or risk getting burned big time.

I agree. ;)

I thought I wrote a helpful reply overall, including my offer to explain any specific questions you might have.

With that and the other thread, I'm outa here for a while.

Don't stay away, David. Your help is very much appreciated. I found another web site where all your technical terms like jailbreak are explained. There is so much to know. :)

I found another interesting article too this afternoon. Not all 3G wireless networks are created equal. PC World tests the major services in 13 cities to see whether they deliver.

PS. Once you start reading this stuff, you never stop. Here is a quote:
Dev Team is worried that Apple might release iPhone OS 3.0.1 to fix the exploit that is being used to jailbreak iPhone 3GS.
http://www.iphonehacks.com/2009/06/jaibreak-and-unlock-iphone-3gs-status-report.html

I am glad I don't need it because I have the VZAccess Manager with Verizon Wireless for my notebook.

I really like my iphone. I have had it for about 9 months. So many things you can do with it. Its definately the best mobile device out there.:cheer: IF you like listening to podcasts I recommend "Today in Iphone" which can be found in the itunes store. Its updated once a week and talks about the latest features and apps available for the iphone. Also frequent talk about from users and their experience jailbreaking and teathering. You can really learn a lot about the features and apps available for the iphone as well as be up to date on the latest releases and their capability.

Are you going to upgrade? I would like to because I hate that I don't have cut and paste nor multi media text messaging either which I had with my old Motorola smartphone. Also, the camera is much better. I got mine for Christmas so almost new. I am addicted to it and use it everywhere while waiting in line or in the doctor's office for my SO, who cannot drive. It makes both of us much happier. :)
