We will be heading to the Custom House in a few weeks and would love some of your favorite restaurant recommendations. It has been five years since we've been there and I know there were a lot of changes after the pandemic. Of course, we are seafood lovers, as well as the fabulous Italian restaurants in the North End.

I decided to just Copy & Paste my Boston list, so fwiw, here you go.
We've visited Boston in either mid-October or early December 9 times out of the last 12 years, I think.
Heading back this October and can't wait....we love Boston.

Quick Note, probably will be repeated:
All North End restaurants are walkable from Custom House.....more fun that way.
Reservations a definite requirement if they take them. Many restaurants require cash.

Boston Restaurants:
All of those listed are personal favorites…the first two ** are special. The list and the accompanying descriptions are all my own personal opinion.
Reservations are a MUST for any place here that takes reservations, at least 2-3 weeks in advance to be safe.
Opentable or Resy might make it easier, sometimes a call is necessary.

[A quick note about Boston’s North End restaurants: All the restaurants are quite busy at all times, and you need to know
how things are because of that. You may encounter a server or a staff member “with an attitude” on occasion (or even often),
but my advice is to “Let it go!”.
You are dining in either very crowded spaces (if post-Covid19 norms have returned, or in very limited, spaced-table arrangements
if Covid19 protocols are still in place). Remember that the kitchen is hot, the food takes a lot of attention, and the staff is non-stop
super-busy and their days are long and crazy, and that’s just how it is.
It’s life in Boston's "Little Italy” (and other big cities), so do not let it diminish your amazing dining experiences there.
They sometimes feel rushed to get you out and someone else in, especially with today’s limited seating which causes financial pressure,
and therefore they might make that known subliminally or outright. It absolutely does not bother me because it’s understandable.
So become one of them! Embrace the moment, and use the opportunity to enjoy yourself and at the same time help them, too.
A “Grazie mille, Ciao", and “Can’t wait to come back" will go a long way.
Dining in the North End is indeed special, and makes great memories, so keep that warm smile on your face, and make a new friend!]

*** FACT TO KNOW: Dining in North End/Little Italy has been strictly CASH ONLY in the past, but with Covid19
that might have changed, so make sure you know the prevailing practice before you go.

PERSONAL FAVORITES: * = Top 5

Mamma Maria
**……https://mammamaria.com/ Of those in my top 5, it’s my FAVORITE! And if you go, you’ll see why….pure elegance & class.
authentic Italian with a more upscale flare. Never rushed here. Romantic with quieter atmosphere, lovely decor with white tablecloths,
food amazing, service impeccable, truly as good as it gets. Again, make reservations way ahead, especially here…like 3-4 weeks.
Request "second floor window table". Top of hill in Paul Revere Square. (Had a great memorable meal here with TUG’s “jont” and our wives!)

Limoncello**…. http://www.ristorantelimoncello.com/
authentic Italian with fine bistro feel, and in my “top 5”. Beautiful, romantic interior with an awesome mural filling up one wall.
Great food and service. Immediately adjacent to Paul Revere’s House. Get reservations way in advance…it stays booked far ahead. Request a table in "Left Half” of restaurant in section where mural is. There is a mid-room partition half-wall, so my favorite table
is along that partition (still within the “mural” half)!

Bricco**…. https://bricco.com/
gourmet Italian cuisine and cocktails are standard fare at this cozy authentic restaurant in Boston’s North End. Also in my "top 5”. It became one of my favorites after our very first meal,
and it will be a go-to spot whenever we return. Menu is wonderful, food is delicious, and service is superb. The item I ordered last time was tied with the best I’ve ever had,
so it has remained memorable since we left the room….I’ll run back to get it again. The bar area is one of the area’s most fun hangouts, and it’s always very crowded, but the energy is real and the laughter and good times will keep you coming back. Reservations a must, and way in advance. Suggest going early for a great table. Located on Hanover Street.

La Famiglia Giorgio’s…...https://www.lafamigliagiorgios.com/
Highly rated authentic Italian restaurant in North End with great food and good service. Very cozy rustic interior and attractive art including
a wonderful Italian mural. I remember this place by the gorgeous wooden front door (a lot of that in Florence, Italy—big beautiful wooden doors!)
and flower boxes out front. We dined there once and it made a great impression.
Huge variety of menu items that covers the great traditional Italian dishes. A lot to like here.

Florentine Cafe…….https://www.florentinecafeboston.com/ Very nice place, you’ll know it by the long row of window flower boxes out front,
sort of a landmark on the corner of Hanover St….Very good food, and a cozy, romantic interior and ambiance. Nice menu, all the basics and all done well.
Fun to sit at the window and people-watch too. We first had a late lunch there and it was excellent…and the dinner menuis impressive too. Very enjoyable.
I’ve noticed that it’s always crowded inside…a good sign.

Union Oyster Househttp://unionoysterhouse.com/ Claimed to be the oldest restaurant in America. Whether really true or not doesn't matter, as it WAS one of the first.
Small but wonderful and historic, too. See the Kennedy booth upstairs! And ask to dine on second floor.
AND see the special plaque on the wall at the top of the stairs----extremely interesting.
Really good food and service. Located in a a very old section of town, very quaint but beautiful and definitely worth the fairly short walk from Custom House.
Street area outside & architecture of buildings look like something out of Harry Potter, but no wands allowed inside. A definite visit is recommended. My favorite oyster house.

Neptune Oyster Bar…..https://www.neptuneoyster.com/ extremely popular, very crowded, long wait-time, but touted as Boston's
quintessential Italian dive. Very busy bar seating & busy tables. Some love the frenetic atmosphere, some don’t. Touted as a “must”,

Traditional pub fare, and we love it. A regular stop when we’re at Custom House. Hope you get to experience when a bunch of guys at the bar strike up

PIZZA, PIZZA……. are you kidding? EVERYWHERE you look in North End there's fantastic pizza. Close your eyes and pick one.
Or just duck in anywhere when you can’t walk another step…you’ll be happy. But for a special treat, well worth the walk to the
upper border of North End, visit "THE ORIGINAL” …yes, the very first pizzeria in America. It’s a hole-in-the-wall as you might expect,
but it’s the most glorious dive I know, blending great pizza & beverage with culinary history. The American history of pizza thrives here.
And it stays busy. It’s cozy & hopelessly romantic in its simplicity, and perfectly beautiful in its own way…..and it’s truly a fun evening.
And of course the pizzas are fantastic, too. Who knows the many famous and infamous who dined here before you?
Regina Pizzeria…. http://www.reginapizzeria.com/north_end.html
Visit only the original location on Thatcher Street!….for us from Custom House it’s a 12-15 min walk, so it’s easily doable.
How I placed it last here at the bottom of my list is inexplicable, but nevertheless, here it is…..surely a great memory,
and always the one we talk about after we get home……so, perhaps best left for last. Ciao ciao!

OTHER good spots to consider, all rated well…….

Pomodoro...https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaur...83-Reviews-Pomodoro-Boston_Massachusetts.html

Quincy Market (Food Court)…..one of then longest food courts you’ll ever see. Great for a quick bite on the run,
or just a plop-down inexpensive dinner after you’re exhausted from a full day out and about in Boston. Cheap dates, here you go.

BREAKFAST:

If you want a nice relaxed breakfast, we have found two places easily walkable from MVC Pulse at Custom House, & both are very enjoyable.
First, the Marriott Long Wharf Hotel…about 2 blocks away, on the harbor….very nice buffet, great coffee and a nice water/boat view.
Second, The Langham Hotel…about 4-5 blocks away on Franklin St (6 min walk), but an impressive and excellent breakfast/brunch buffet.

Here’s how to walk to both: https://goo.gl/maps/Ga5HJVQ1q43KmYrT8

Pastry Shops in North End: All are great and people have favorites, so test them as you will.

Modern Pastry…...https://www.modernpastry.com/ hands down my favorite. Love the seated area to people-watch as we indulge.

A FINAL THOUGHT on the pastry shops:
Quoted from The Godfather, the source of all wisdom….”Leave the gun, take the cannoli…"

After dinner in North End, run by a pastry shop on your walk back to Custom House and grab some pastries, especially cannoli.
They go very well with a nice bottle of Italian wine. Makes for a special evening.....

Thanks for your patience on this long "short list".....hope this will help.
Things change, and the places on this list will too, but I’m hoping it will add some measure of enjoyment
to anyone who loves the city of Boston, and wishes to get "a great taste of the city” as the visit progresses.
In all fairness I didn’t intend to rule out those notable places NOT mentioned in the list, but at least these are tried and tested, and are worthy of consideration.
And remember, these are only the ones in the North End, as Boston has dozens and dozens of world-class restaurants outside the North End.
In fact the very TOP RATED restaurants, ZAGAT quality, are scattered throughout the rest of the city. But while on vacation, we typically don’t search for those,
hence my limited list. The pursuit of a definitive list would be exhausting, near impossible, and not my intention. So I focused on those within walking distance
of my "home away from home" in Boston——the Marriott Vacation Club Pulse at Custom House.
It will be my ongoing joy to search for new spots in the coming years in my favorite big city in America. Hope to be there each year, anytime October thru December.

Ciao ciao!

I decided to just Copy & Paste my Boston list, so fwiw, here you go.
We've visited Boston in either mid-October or early December 9 times out of the last 12, I think.

Most of the food is good, and the desserts and treats wonderful. Next to Faneuil Hall….street level & one street over from Custom House.

Ciao ciao!
Thank you, thank you! Boston is one of our favorite cities and it holds a special place in our hearts, since we lived in Framingham while my husband was at Natick Labs many years ago. We now live in Texas and are sorely deprived of good Italian food and fresh seafood. However, we have a son in Stow, MA, so we have a reason to frequent the area and we love the Custom House. Many of your recommendations are favorites of ours as well, but some are new to us, so we appreciate your your help.

Hello,

Row34 is one of the best seafood restaurants in Boston and have even been called one of the best in the U.S., they have a location downtown and also in Burlington, MA, Cambridge, MA and Portsmouth, NH

My favorite for seafood and is also my favorite in the North End is the Daily Catch. They have a waterfront location too not far away that DOES take reservations, the original location does not.

Boston has a number of food halls and some of the local chefs have locations there where you can try different things and has long open wooden tables.

Boston Public Market at Haymarket MBTA stop - my favorite here is Red's Best, which is seafood https://bostonpublicmarket.org/vendor/redsbest/

Here's a list of all of them:

Stray bullet - - airborne - - on Hanover Street (North End). Shooter is alleged to be a North End restaurant owner. Bullet went through the window of Modern Pastry, missing its (human) target. Perpetrator is at large, and considered armed and dangerous.

A rerun of the Wild West, with a potential Mafia influence.

We are back from Boston, and I wanted to thank @jme for all the above restaurant suggestions, we tried several and enjoyed them. I wanted to point out the "after work" $30.00 special from 3:00-6;00 at one of jme's suggestions, La Famiglia Giorgio’s

After work
Monday Thru Thursday 3:00-6:00 pm
Three course dinner with a glass of wine: Glass of Montepulciano or Pinot Grigio
Garden Salad
Choice of following entrées:
Fresh Tomato Angel Hair
Gnocchi Bolognese
Vegetarian Sauce with Penne
Linguini & Meatballs
Chicken Parmigiana with Linguine Or Penne
Chicken Broccoli and Penne (choice of sauce)
Linguine and Mussels (choice of sauce)
Mini Cannoli per person

Huge portions, enough to take back to the hotel for another meal. Easy walk from the Custom House too. Salad, entree and dessert with a glass of wine for $30.00, how can you beat that?

Sounds awesome, Gayle! That was a great deal, and the entrees all look great.
I'll have to go back there the next time we're in Boston. It's been about 5-6 years since we were there at La Famiglia Giorgio’s.

BTW, we just returned from Boston this past Saturday. We were there 6 nights ----2 nights at Long Wharf Hotel (lovely upgraded suite using suite night awards)
and 4 nights at Custom House on an Encore Package (11th floor overlooking North End/Harbor).
We had outstanding dinners at Mamma Maria's, Lucca, Bricco, and Legal Seafoods;
lunches at Black Rose Irish Pub (twice), James Hook & Co, Union Oyster House, and as we always do---Joe's on Newbury (great French Onion Soup and everything else!);
and two "walk-in" dinners at Regina Pizzeria and Granary Tavern (one block from Custom House.....had to have a burger!!!).
Also did a full day bus tour to Newport RI to see the Vanderbilt Mansions, etc, and dined at The Red Parrot (been there before, very nice).
We've done the Newport tour before and enjoyed it just as much the second time.

Free breakfasts at Marriott Long Wharf's "M Club"----the private members-only dining room. Breakfast buffet is always enjoyable at Long Wharf.
Also spent the better part of an hour & a half one morning for our traditional "Coffee Morning" at Caffe Vittoria on Hanover Street (look it up and read history!!!),
where we also enjoyed fabulous pastries from Modern Bakery
(that's where Caffe Vittoria secures the pastries served to their customers!!!!! Revealing, huh? As we approached Caffe Vittoria, a guy was walking just ahead of us
carrying a tall stack of VERY big boxes labeled "Modern Pastry", and he said those were being delivered to Caffe Vittoria). Caffe Vittoria is a must-do, btw......nothing like it.

Have to say that our dining itinerary and experiences for this trip, as usual, were as good as it gets. Mamma Maria, Lucca, and Bricco are definitely 3 of the top restaurants in the North End, and I'll go ahead and say it----those are probably the three best, imho....... there are other great ones too, though, but those three definitely rank highly.
We had certain table assignments at the first 4 on the list above-----each based on requests----and each one waiting on us. Will say only that all my table requests were fulfilled. Those tables also came with their best server, which made it all the more special. We wanted to squeeze in a couple more favorite places,
like the charming Limoncello, but just couldn't make it work.
We really enjoyed being back in Boston.....the city was crowded in general, and Hanover St was wall-to-wall in the evenings. Lots of fun, though.

Caffe Vittoria...special enough to attach these pics!!!
Select "photos" on right.

Thanks for the updates. We are headed there in a few weeks and it will make our lives easier to have restaurants lined up in advance.

Reservations are a must! They seem to be booking up in advance like never before.
PM me soon and tell me what kind of meals/experiences you're looking for.
We did some very expensive ones, and I think we'll do it differently next time. (There were four of us.)
Either share meals or whatever......and mix in some mid-level spots rather than the cream.
The food is great there no matter what, so it'll be easy to figure out.
The thing is, we get excited about going, and "it just happens".
We'll be eating hot dogs for a while I think, though.
Had homemade vegetable soup at home last night, and looking to make some great homemade chili this weekend.
Not too bad, as my wife's soups (and everything else) are amazing. Great time of year for food!

We had a great time walking, exploring, and eating our way around Boston while staying at the Marriott Boston Custom House. I will post my impressions and activity recommendations of our Customs House stay on another thread. This post will continue the dining thread.

My husband wanted to check out some of the older Irish pubs and we went to:

JJ Foleys

Emmets (I liked this one the best, cute little redheaded hostess with an Irish accent who greeted each customer with a big smile and a cheery "Hiya! How's it going?")

Black Rose ( In contrast, the hostess here said absolutely nothing to us, no greeting, led us to a table, dropped the menus and walked away without speaking or even making any eye contact, very strange.)

We also ate at:

Mare Oyster Bar ( Was on jme's list, as well as a list provided by a friend. Modern Italian, great service and food, pricey, a happening place with young clientele, we felt a little old)

La Famiglia Giorgios (Great "commuter special" from 3-6 for a three course dinner and a glass of wine for $30.00. Traditional Italian.)

Union Oyster House ( We did not have oysters, as we are from the PNW and have our share of good oysters at home. That might have been a mistake, we had a very mediocre meal here, I honestly can't remember what is was, but it was deep fried. If I were to go here again I think I would limit my order to a bowl of chowder. I'm glad we went though, because the old interior was fascinating, and I loved seeing the Kennedy booth.)
unionoysterhouse.com

Regina Pizzeria

Caffe Vittorio

Mikes Pastry

Modern Pastry

Bovo Bakery (This one was our favorite of the three pastry spots, and a much smaller line.)

We ate most breakfasts in our room, the in-room kitchenette is a great asset to the property. We walked to Trader Joes in the Seaport area, about a 17 minute walk, 0.6 miles from the property and stocked up on some food. A good way to economize as we were on week two of our New England vacation, having spent week one in a rental car driving to Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine and staying in hotels and dining out. I'm used to staying in timeshares and was a bit shocked at hotel prices.

A friend of a friend who lives in Boston sent us her list of favorites, and I have included it below:

  • Mare Oyster Bar in the North End - Italian Seafood
  • Kava in the South End - Greek
  • Row 34 in the Seaport - Oysters and other seafood (lobster rolls)
  • Legals Harborside in the Seaport (1st floor) - lobster rolls
  • Barking Crab in the Seaport - lobster rolls
  • James Hook & Co. (a short walk from your hotel) - lobster rolls
  • Saltie Girl on Newbury - Seafood
  • Trillium for beer (Seaport or Fenway area)
  • Barcelona in the South End
  • Bar Volpe in South Boston - Italian
  • Woods Hill Pier 4 - Seaport farm to table
  • Krasi - Greek in back bay
  • Bistro du Midi - great spot for lunch on the first floor in cafe, right on the Public Gardens
  • Dauxave - our special occasion place - does not disappoint - pricey

We passed one spot on the above list, Bistro du Midi https://www.bistrodumidi.com/
several times and were intrigued, very pretty spot, especially if you were to eat outside, but it seemed like we were there during odd hours and never were never hungry enough to go in.

We also passed "Zo" http://www.zoboston.com/ a Greek restaurant very close to Custom House and opened only for lunch till 2:00, and noted a line of office workers outside every day. We figured it must be good if the locals line up for the food, but we did not get a chance to try it. Very reasonable prices.

I read somewhere that there is 233 places to eat within a half mile of The Customs House. I believe it.
