“New” owner needing advice…
I want to book 9 (or more) days in Hawaii. My issues:
  • Busy season
  • Not my home week (can’t book until 9-months out)
  • Trying for a very popular room-type with low inventory
  • Want a specific property
My choices seem to be... once my 9-month booking window starts to open;
  1. Book in 3-day segments ASAP, and hope to get the same room type
  2. Or wait out the days to get one 9-day booking
On this episode of “What would YOU do?” What would you do?

* not actually a new owner, just new to actually using my points! :0(

This is probably the only way it is going to happen. Make sure you buy a changeable reservation when you book the first segment so you don't have to keep paying reservation fees along the way.

"Walking" your booking by adding a day at a time may seems unduly burdensome, but it's the best way to ensure that you get what you want for the whole 9 days. Otherwise, wait 3 days any you may find that adding 3 to the same-type unit isn't feasible.

What I would do is first see if you have availability for the dates which you are interested in before the 276 day window opens. I would then book a 3-day changeable reservation starting even before your desired dates. (Of course, this is much easier if you can be flexible). I would then walk that reservation until you get to the start of your desired dates. Then I would add additional days until you get your full nine days. This is method that I use.

I think the optimal lead time is the three days up to the check-in day of the week you want. I don't think it does any good to go earlier than that.

Most resorts are Saturday check in, once you get that day in a reservation the full inventory week is broken. The database is loaded as weeks for the home season, once club opens up the weeks can be broken up into days. Once the week is broken you can pick off the days with the walking reservation strategy.
