I just want to run through the process on doing this online without calling an agent. Let's say I have an existing point reservation for Aug 1 to Aug 8. At 60 days before (at midnight), I find availability for the 7 nights starting from August 1. I would go ahead and hold the reservation without selecting points bucket, and then on another browser screen, log on to MVC and cancel the existing reservation. Once cancelled, how do I ensure that I can see the available points to use with the new reservation? Do I refresh the same screen that I am holding the reservation and the released holding points (for the cancelled 7-day reservation) will show up?

Thanks!

The system holds your reservation for 15 minutes. Sometimes I've had it allow me to use points from my newly cancelled reservation without having to search again...sometimes it makes me do another search but then shows that I have an outstanding reservation request on hold.

But I've only done this when I want to swap between banked, borrowed, and/or current year points in advance of 61 days out. I don't really understand what you are trying to do...if you cancel at 60 days the points from the existing reservation will go into holding.

At Executive level, there's a 25% discount for reservations within 30 days of arrival. At Presidential and Chairman's Club, the discount is 30% within 60 days of arrival. If OP is Presidential or Chairman's Club, the net result of doing this would be having 30% of the points for the reservation back in the holding bin and useable for a short term reservation sometime later in the year. Not a terrible thing to have even with the limited booking window - there might be other uses for those points as well. @dioxide45 put together a chart of what all the different categories of points can be used for - I don't remember if they can be used for resort credit, etc.

Thanks. So it sounds like the cancelled points should show up with a refresh?
Yes-ish. As I wrote, sometimes it doesn't work and the system makes you go back and choose 'Book points', select the resort, pick dates, and then lo and behold your held reservation is waiting at the bottom...and then after choosing it the cancelled points are available to book with.
