How many are still participating in book clubs? I want to start a new one, but I read an article about 3 months ago saying that the new rage is actually cooking clubs -- just what I don't need: another reason to eat more! Are book clubs 'out of style'?

Granted, we did have typically have snacks at book club meetings, but we always made it very simple and most of us had a glass or two of wine and maybe a small nibble at the snack.

I could see doing the cooking club when I retire and my kids are on their own, but I don't really get how the cooking club works for busy Moms. Seems so much easier to read a book over a month when time permits, then once a year hosting an easy meeting which required essentially 15-20 minutes in prep time.

Book clubs broaden the mind. Cooking clubs tend to broaden the waistline and rear :D

My book club does both! Once a year, we do a "themed" meal based on one of the books we read. This year, we read "A Year in Provence" and had a wonderful potluck French dinner in lieu of our regular meeting.

I am a member of a book club and a dining out club. With 180 homes in our neighborhood part of Sun City, it is hard to get to know everyone. We have dining out groups(four or five couples) and switch groups every six months. The group goes out to dinner, brunch, etc. once a month. Our book club has a luncheon once a year and limit refreshments at meetings. We also try to go together to see movies when the books we have read come out as movies. We have a Bon Appetite club here in Sun City but I haven't attended. In fact we have over 200 clubs so it is hard to choose. I'm off the mah jong this afternoon!
