I need input.
I think I may have made a mistake, but it's too late now. We owned 2 weeks outright at LaCabana in Aruba,
Recently while in Aruba, we purchased points thru BlueGreen and signed over our ownership to them. Now we own points, and have weeks deeded to us. I am guessing these are our home weeks. Because of converting to points, we actually now have 4 weeks instead of 2. Not very familiar with points but I'm thinking if I want to go to Aruba during my home weeks I can and if not I use my points to go someplace else. I believe I need to reserve my home weeks in advance.
Can someone give me input as to how happy (or not happy) you are with BlueGreen? How far in advance do you need to request a trade? How far in advance do you need to reserve your home resort? Are they difficult or easy to get? Has anyone traded points for a cruise? If so, how many points and was the process easy to do? How easy is it to convert a week into a trade with RCI or II?
I know I sound like a neophyte, but actually I am!!
Thanks for any input.

It's unclear whether the points you bought are deeded in Aruba. regardless, whatever unit week shows on the deed is your owned week. You can request that at 12 months out with priority on it (no one else can have it if you claim it at 12 months). If you don't claim it, anyone else can request it at 11 months out. Please note, this is the exact unit on your deed. If you are deeded to a studio, that's what you have priority on.

At 11 months you can request a full week at any of the resorts in prime time (red time and above). At 11 months you can request paritial weeks in blue and white time.

At 5 months, you can request partial weeks in red time and above.

How easy or hard? Depends on what you're looking for and how vigilant you are in calling Reservations. I don't normally have a problem. I called in January and got Spring Break on the beach in Myrtle Beach. You just never know until you call and ask.

Points for a cruise isn't normal points operation with Bluegreen. However, I did get a voucher for a cruise when I paid maint last year. The particular cruise I am looking at is listed a couple hundred dollars pp less than on Vacationstogo.com However, generally, you are way better off in paying for a cruise outright. If you wanted, you could book a BG week with 2000 points and deposit to RCI and trade for a cruise, but, you will still have to pay an exchange fee and also a per person cruise rate. Normally, this is not a good deal.

It is very simple to call Bluegreen to "book a week for exchange." The reservationists are very helpful if you tell them generally what you are trying to do. AFter they tell you the unit # and week, call RCI and give them the info and you have just deposited. I don't use II, but I would expect it's also fairly easy, however, they have more restrictions on what resorts, units, weeks they will accept from Bluegreen.

I'm quite happy with Bluegreen. You can converse with other members at the Bluegreen Yahoo Group. Some are happy, some aren't, some are trying to gather info to determine whether they are happy or not.

It's Bluegreen.

From groups.yahoo.com just search Bluegreen.

If you don't have one already, you will need to create a Yahoo ID.

BocaBum is our TUG expert on the bluegreen system. Hopefully he can chime in.

bmf,

Don't get too concerned yet. Tell us a bit more about what you own and we can help you out.

You will still be able to get into La Cabana. In fact, you will have more flexibility in unit size, check in dates and number of days you want to stay.

Wherever you were re-deeded, you will have enough points to book what you traded in.

And, you will now have the ability to book a stay in one of the over 40 Bluegreen Resorts. Plus if you learn how to exchange, you will see that Bluegreen is one of the most cost effective traders out there in any exchange system.

So, once you learn the details of what you've got, you will be in good shape. In addition to the Bluegreen Yahoo Group, you can click on my signature line where we have a forum dedicated to Bluegreen. You can find a lot of good information posted there as well.

We had a number of La Cabana fixed weeks and converted them last year to BG points. We gave up our weeks and ended up with different weeks on which the points are based. In many ways I ended up with better weeks than I gave up though I did hate giving up my 3 BR 4th of July double lockoff. As I understand it for Aruba, you should have only aruba weeks as an underlying base at least for this conversion though I suspect this may change in the future. Depending on the weeks/units you gave up, you may do very well, I know I did. That's especially true since they just announced their third Special Assessment in the last 7 years in addition to a 25% maint fee increase one year in between "in lieu of a Special Assessment".

As for points options, you'll get a return of about 5¢ per point used to pay dues and 4¢ per point to pay for cruises and the like.
