Beware Friday Check-in Dates In 2011

I think it happens only once every 6 or 7 years but 2011 is it.

If you own or exchange into a week with a check-in date of Friday in 2011, it will begin a week later than usual. The year 2011 begins on Saturday. So a Week 1 check-in date would be Saturday, January 1. But the 1st Friday in January is January 7th. It shifts all the other Friday check-in dates in the year seven days later than usual.

For example, if you own Week 6, the Friday check-in date usually falls during the first week in February. In 2011 it will fall during the second week in February.

You will be checking into a Week 6 Friday unit on February 11 and a Week 6 Saturday unit on February 5.

IN 2012, the Sundays shift and become a week earlier than usual. But that seems like such a long way off now.

I'm pretty sure they all move at once?

By the very nature of our calendar with a year of 365 days (and 366 in a leap year) (neither of which is an exact number of weeks), what happens is that each year check-in dates move back one day, or 2 days in a leap year. (We see the opposite effect if we look at a particular date in the year, eg Christmas, which "moves forward", being on a Saturday in 2010, but in 2011 it's on a Sunday).

Coming back to the timeshare check-ins, to offset this continual back-shifting of dates, every 5 years the check-in dates will jump forward a week. But the Friday, Saturday and Sunday check-in dates all move at once, and if I'm correct, this is where week 53 comes in to fill the gap caused by the check-in dates moving forward by a week! In 2010 at Orange Lake we will have a week 53 with a Friday check-in of Dec 31st 2010, Saturday check-in on Jan 1st 2011, and Sunday check-in on Jan 2nd 2011, then week 1 2011 begins on 7th, 8th and 9th Jan 2011 for Fri, Sat and Sun check-ins respectively.

I find this topic interesting because we own weeks 13 and 14 at Orange Lake and my wife's Easter holidays (she works in a school and so her holidays are "fixed") fall around the first 2 weeks of April. Her holiday dates do exactly the same thing, i.e. they move forward a week every 5 years, the problem being that they don't always move forward in the same year as our timeshare weeks, so I have to do some juggling as we don't always get an exact overlap.

It may be that some resorts deal with this differently than Orange Lake.

I noticed this too on reserving my RCI Points underlying weeks. All Friday fixed week checkins are one week late.

I asked about Week 53 for the 2010 Friday after Xmas at our common resort last week and was told the HOA had to vote on whether the Friday Week 52 owners "use" the Week 53 and under what terms.

We own 4 back-to-back weeks at a Ft. Lauderdale resort. Three of them have Friday check-in dates. The last one has a Saturday check-in. We usually have to rent or "barter" for the missing night after we check out of out 3rd week and have to wait until the next day, Saturday, to check into our fourth week.

While looking at the actual check-in dates for 2011 I see that our Week 8 Friday check-in is on Friday February 25 and our Week 9 Saturday check-in date is February 26

I called the resort manager and asked if this was correct. She said, "Don't remind me. I remember the last time that happened, so many owners arrived on the wrong date. It was a nightmare, especially because we are fully booked in February." She said that they are planning to send out notices in large print near the end of 2010 warning owners to double-check their arrival dates, especially if they check-in on Friday.

If you look at a calendar and start counting out the Fridays, the first Friday of the year occurrs on January 7th in 2011. So Week 2 Friday begins on January 14, week 3 on January 21 etc...

Then start counting out the Saturdays. The first Saturday is on January 1. The Week 2 Saturday begins on January 8, Week 3 begins on January 15 etc...

We will have to rent out one of our units--either Week 8 or 9 since there is no point in keeping 2 large lack-off units for the 3 or us. And the units are 7 floors apart.

It's okay with us though because some February weeks we own at another nearby resort will shift into President's Day week, instead of their usual week before time slot. That will make them available for family members and friends who are tied to the school holidays.

I'm glad I started planning ahead for next year. Otherwise I might have been promising the wrong week to people, and might have purchased airline tickets to return home the wrong week.

It really depends on your resort. Some resorts treat each check-in day individually (those which have this anomaly with friday weeks starting a week later than saturday and sunday weeks).

Others bundle the weeks together, and base the resort calendar on a single day. That is the case with Orange Lake, where ALL check ins are based on the first friday. The "first saturday" is really the first saturday following the first friday (which can be anywhere from January 2nd to January 8th. Sunday is the first sunday following the first friday, so can be January 3rd through January 9th. This can be seen here:

Anyone who is not sure what their resot does should contact them - don't end up showing up for the wrong week in 2011 (or worse, renting out the wrong week!)
