1) Is there a vacation destination you wish to visit most of the time or on a regular basis? if so where? Not yet, but we prefer CA (live here), Hawaii, Europe, AU

2) Do you want to visit your home resort at least half the time, or do you want to trade more than half the time? Trade

3) What are your 5 top trade destinations? California (live here), Hawaii, CO, Europe, AU

4) How many people do you usually travel with - total, including yourself? mostly 2, sometimes another couple

5) Can you travel any time, or are you locked into the school schedule? Flexible, Self-employed

6) Can you make firm plans 12 or more mos. in advance? Yes, but we do more within 60 days of the trip ie last minute

7) Can you vacation for a full week at a time? YES, will often want to do 3-4 days too though.

8) What level of accommodations do you prefer on a scale of 1 to 5 stars? 3.5*+ . Comfortable bed is most important. Don't need super fancy.

9) How much can you afford to spend upfront, without financing? $5k, but would love to start with FREE or less to test the waters...

10) How much can you afford to spend every year for a maintenance fee that will come due right after Christmas, and increase each year? $2k max, would love to start with 1k.

11) Are you a detail oriented planner? Yes

12) Do you understand that once you buy a timeshare, it may be very difficult to sell or give away, and you are responsible for all fees, until you do? YES

**I am great at finding deals, but trying to see if one of these programs may be better for us than just timeshare rentals...they don't seem to line up as much. RCI, Interval, Worldmark all seem interesting - any way to see their databases without signing up??? Also, high end Marriott seems a bit pricey, we often spend under $200/night and no more than $300 usually for just us as a couple**

Thank you so much!!! Really appreciate this forum!

Hi @liveplaylove
If you can't find the link to update your membership, msg tug@tug2.net and the admins can help sort of out.
EVERYBODY who fills out this survey says they want to exchange more. OK, but what if it costs twice as much to exchange a week than to go to your home resort or within a 'home group'? Let's say you have a $1,000 a year MF for one week. But if you want to take that week in some other continent. On top of that $1K MF, you have $100 membership to the exchange, $250 for EACH exchange, airfare, rental car, parking, resort fees, etc, etc.

I don't have any specific systems for you to look at, but living in CA, Worldmark has nice, though not over the top resorts, are available resale, hold some value, and (if you choose) exchange with either RCI or Interval.
I own and like VRI resorts, they have 70some, mostly in the West, mostly independent and with owner controlled HOAs. Look at www.vriresorts.com/

I suggest you stick around TUG, learn as much as you can, and ask questions if you can't find what you need in the search function.

best wishes.

Jim

Another recommendation for Worldmark. There are 90+ resorts on the West Coast, including a couple in Hawaii. Maintenance fees are low and internal reservation system is free, basically there is not a need to pay a 3rd party exchange company to book at other resorts. It is very flexible and you can book fewer nights than a week. It also has cash-based booking through Inventory Special, Monday Madness, Fax Time and Bonus Time. The resorts are always clean, rooms are generally very large, kitchens are well-stocked.

If you want to travel outside of the 90+ resorts, you can buy membership at RCI or II to make external exchanges. Exchanges are expensive and they add up.

Worldmark "database" of resorts:
You can try this, I think it is missing a couple of resorts. You can click each link which will open up to the number of credits required based on size and season.

Thank you @Passepartout and @VacationForever !!! What is the best way to get into Worldmark through resales? Prob need 10-20k pts. Looks like $.2/pt is decent? Thanks again!
Go over to wmowners.com. Membership is free.

The first link has a list of Worldmark Trusted Resale Brokers: https://wmowners.com/threads/worldmark-trusted-resale-brokers.45426/

Since you are dipping your toes into the timeshare world, going with the recommended list of brokers will help you through the process. I used to own a 10K contract in 2014 or so and sold in 2018. I just bought from one of these brokers for a 35K contract, awaiting transfer. If you calculate paid-up available credits without borrowing and how much those are worth, you can find contracts for about 10-20 cents per point.

I also own quite alot with Marriott and Vistana.

Thanks @VacationForever - I did sign up so glad you're recommending that! What type of trips did you get w the 10k may I ask? And yeah I see some with a bunch of banked credits which is great!

How's your experience with Marriott and Vistana? I was also looking at Marriott Newport Beach Villas as it's close by, beautiful and could rent it out it seems and pay if off easily if we didn't want to use it every year...I do like having that option in the future for covering fees and income. Have you done any of that too? Thanks again

By the time I sold, I sold it with 30K available without borrowing because I could not use them all. 10K would have expired but I "parked" them at a reservation past expiration. The buyer was super happy. It was the one timeshare that we kicked ourselves for selling, hence we are back to being WM owners again. With Worldmark, we went to Windsor (CA - several times), Victoria (BC), Vancouver (BC), St. George (Utah), Las Vegas, Big Bear, Pismo Beach, Marina (close to Monterey), and Bend (Oregon). I probably missed a couple of locations.

You can make pretty good money by renting out a Marriott's Newport Beach platinum week during the summer. We mainly use our Marriott and Vistana to trade in II or use internal booking systems.

@VacationForever - thanks! What value per pt did you sell at? And did you ever rent any of your reservations out etc? I wonder if viable for non platinum as those are expensive :)
I have never rented out my WM reservations. I do rent out 2 weeks a year for my Marriott timeshare to this same person. It is simply convenient and if I no longer rent to her, I would deposit these into II for trading. All my Marriott and Vistana weeks can use internal trading systems without going through II for exchanges, but I like the value proposition of II.

Back in 2018, I sold for about $4K, I no longer remember how much, but since it was fully loaded, I probably netted 20 cents per point. When I bought 4 or 5 years prior to that, I paid 40 cents per point. They have come down in price. I didn't really care about how much we got back. We just owned too many and had difficulty using them all. In the grand scheme of things, whether WM points cost 10 cents or 20 cents per point, it is still small potatoes. :) It is the annual cost of timeshare usage which makes owning timeshare cost effective.

If you are referring to NCV, it will cost you about $8K to $10K for a platinum week.
