Best strategy for pool chairs and beach umbrellas at Aruba Ocean Club?

Hi,

I'm making my first visit to my recently purchased home at Aruba Ocean Club next Saturday.

What are the current rules for aquiring and maintaining chairs at the pool or an umbrella table on the beach?

I'm hoping that they still have some kind of rule in effect so that everyone has a fair shot at using the pool chairs and beach umbrellas.

Can anybody suggest some good strategies? Thanks for your help!

Best wishes,
Dave

The Ocean Club does not have the over crowding problem that the Surf Club does. I was there in early December - granted not the highest of season - but there were vacant "Palapas" on the beach all day for free. If you wanted one in the front row you could rent it for up to four days and charge it to the room. There were also tons of available pool lounges all day. The down side is that you cannot use the Surf Club lazy river, but the upside is that you are at a resort that is one fourth the size, with twice the beach, and use of the hotel pools as well.

I agree. There is always chairs around the pool and you can go down at 9am and still get a palapa. This was not the case 3 or 4 years ago. If you want a front row palapa (on the water) you may want to be there at 7am when they open hut.

Can we just buy some chairs @ Lings or some place & bring our own to the beach @ Ocean Club?

Ocean Club - no trouble with pool or beach

We were in Aruba the first week of January. There did not seem to be any problem getting chairs at the pool or palapas at the beach at the Ocean Club. Unfortunately the Surf Club, where we stayed, is another story - mad rush to reserve chairs around the pool at 7:30 am as well as palapas on the Surf Club side of the beach. I'm sure many people reserve both - inconsiderate to say the least since you can't be in two places at once. To make matters worse there are now security guards patrolling the beach checking towels to make sure that people stay on the right side of the beach - absolutely ridiculous. It has gone way beyond the restrictions related to the Surf Club Lazy River. The security guards seem to get a thrill out of forcing people to move from one side of the beach to the other - solely based on the color of their beach towel (light blue for Surf Club, pink striped for Ocean Club).

not to hijak this thread but I must disagree with R2Bbrock. I own at the Ocean Club and my maintenance fees go for the upkeep of the Ocean Club palapas. We do not get 1 dime from the Surf Club for the upkeep of them so why should you as an owner at the Surf Club be able to use them?

I agree with you. I purposefully bought at the ocean because it has a better beach and is less crowded. I dont want to share it with non-ocean club folks. Its a preference thing, if I wanted to buy in the larger surf club I would have bought there.

Pool Chairs and palapas

We own 3 platinum weeks at the Ocean Club. We are always there wks 51 and 52. If you want a palapa I am sure that you can go down to the towel hut by 7AM and get a good one. # 108, 106 and 210 are excellent. You will not have a problem at the pool either. If you want to rent a palapa they are the odd numbered ones and you can rent them for 3 days at a time. If you come weeks 51 and 52 change the time to 5:30AM. Also, you can bring your own chair, but if you want to use a palapa you still must get in line. My husband has a bad back and we bring a special chair which we store in Aruba.

We just got back last night. Stayed at OC for a week and SC for one night. I liked the OC W A Y better. THey strictly enforced the rule about OC guests only at the pool and on the beach. Surf Club did the same--giving you a rubber wristband so you could use their pool.
We never had a palapa problem, but did not care about not being in the front. Never had a chair problem----ever--anytime of day. Pool was empty quite often.
One reason may have been the OC pool is more open/windy. The SC pool had nearly no wind. It was a little cool at OC unless you stayed under water. Water at SC seemed warmer, too (wife noticed right away). The SC pool is very crowded/loud/busy. Lazy River was fun for a few laps, then I kind of didn't get it. Crashed into rocks too often to be really "relaxing". Maybe just me!
Oh, if you use the gym, the OC gets to use the Marriott Hotel gym. Best I've seen at any Marriott. SC was not bad, but more typical t/s gym. Stellaris Resort gym is big, has WAY more stuff, gives out free apples, too!

If you do find it difficult to get a pool chair, just go an "reserve" one at 7:00 am or so with a towel.:D

So you're the one I always see putting out the towels when I'm sitting on my balcony drinking my coffee, while the rest of my family is still sleeping. ;)

The mad rush to get a palapa is ridiculous. I hated lining up at dawn to sit down. I found it degrading and unnecessary. Marriott should have built a beach large enough to accommodate their owners. The current situation sucks in a word.

the bright side

My husband and I get up really early, no alarm clock needed. We both have long commutes to work so leave the house around 6AM. Fortunately for us being at the towel hut at 7AM is not an inconvenience. By 7AM I have already gotten up, walked down to Dunkin Donuts for coffee and walked back.

Now for the bright side. I once stayed at the Marriott in South Carolina and to use their beach you had to rent chairs and umbrellas separately. It cost me $30 a day for two chairs and a little umbrella. The water was also not carribbean blue and it sure wasnt warm. So I do think there is a bright side to the story. I do however agree that Marriott overbuilt the surf club and created the problem. Unfortunately there really is no easy solution to fix it. I did hear that the condos next to the surf are on hold so at least you won't have to compete with those folks for beach space. Just looking for the bright side.

And, if we aren't down there by 7:00AM, what happens? No chair? We will be @ Ocean Club later this month. I am just going to go out & buy our own chairs @ Lings or someplace. And, give them to somebody when we leave @ the end of the week.

not such a big deal!

I don't know why people make such an issue about the palapa system - it's not that big a deal. People who go down at 7 (or earlier!) are the ones who want to be in the first row or two along the beach. There are plenty of palapas available, particularly if you own at the Ocean Club (we own at the Surf Club). We've never had a problem getting a palapa, and we've been at the Surf Club in different seasons during the past 6 years.

Personally I don't like to be in the first two rows because everyone who wants to go into the water is constantly walking in front of you or in-between your chairs.

But ... if you want to be in the first rows and don't want to go down early to sign up for one, then pay the fee and reserve one - you can do it for 3 days in a row, then re-up for another 3 days.

If you bring your own chair, you'll have to find space between palapas, which may be tough to do. The beaches in Aruba are public so you should be permitted to do so. The big obstacle at the Surf Club since they moved the marina is that the palapas are much closer together than before.

So you're the one I always see putting out the towels when I'm sitting on my balcony drinking my coffee, while the rest of my family is still sleeping. ;)

If you were a wise one like I, you too would be down there with me throwing towels out for that family of yours that is still sleeping.:p

People always find solutions to various problem while vacationing.

Sounds like a plan.

Buy them if you want, but there is no need to. There are lots of chairs available any time.:D

We just got home from a wonderful week at the Surf Club. There was no problem getting a palapa. Sunday morning I first went down after 7 and figured I'd be out of luck and there were still several available. The rest of the week I just paid the $10 and reserved ones in advance because I was lazy, but there were empty ones pretty much every day, so I could have reserved one either the afternoon before or in the morning for free. There were plenty of chaises on the beach- literally stacks of extras and even late morning the bimini chaises (the ones with the canopies) were still available as well.

It is true that the SC and OC beach areas are similar in size and the OC has something like 220 villas (not sure of the number) and the SC has 450, but I don't understand why people post that the beach isn't big enough. With the added palapas getting one isn't much of an issue and, frankly, I have been to MUCH more crowded beaches elsewhere (hey, people worldwide flock to Waikiki beach; not that's wall to wall people!).

And, the 7-7:30 rush to reserve the best pool spots, although a bit ridiculous, is similar to what happens at lots of other resorts and cruises, unfortunately. They will be cracking down on the reserving and not using issue and are working on dealing with the problem. They are also expanding the pool decks and adding chaises to accommodate everyone comfortably. The pools themselves are so large that they certainly are not crowded, let alone overcrowded. They were 96% occupied, so it was certainly a good week to judge, and we used the pool daily and there was never a crowd. As a matter of fact, there were a few times I enjoyed the Lazy River in virtual solitude. Personally, I find it nice to have a chance to chat with others on occasion.

Although I really prefer the SC pool, I respect that others prefer the one at the OC. However, I would not characterize it as loud, crowded or busy; to the contrary, I found the Lazy River wonderfully relaxing and my family strongly prefers it over the OC's much less expansive pool facilities.

Just to reiterate, since there seems to be some concern about the chair availability- there were stacks of unused chaises all day at both resorts. I'd venture to guess they need those for the peak vacation weeks, but otherwise they likely remain vacant.

Glad to have missed the frigid weather here over the last week and Aruba's wonderful weather (despite having a bit of rain every day, but luckily it didn't interfere with our plans at all) and great restaurants. Enjoy your upcoming trips!

m61376, happy to hear that you enjoyed Aruba. We will be there soon & can't wait. Thx for the encouraging "chair report"! When you say that it rained every day, was it morning, afternoon or evening & for how long each time? Was it windy? What were the temps...nice & warm? What level sunscreen did you have to use? I am thinking 15...I think that's what I used last time but I can't remember.

The last few weeks have been atypically rainy. The rain was erratic; there were brief periods of drizzle and occasional heavy rain, but generally for 10 or 15 minutes. We had that a couple of mornings, a few evenings and 2 afternoons just as we were leaving the beach at 4ish. It was in the eighties and gorgeous otherwise. I understand that the previous week there was more rain. This past week the only rain that lasted longer than half an hour was overnight/early morning.

As for the wind- typical Aruba, with a wonderful cooling breeze so you don't roast, but swimming was delightful.

I don't like to burn. I have always used a 30-45, but this year I bought the Neutrogena 70 spray, which is new. Interestingly, perhaps because of the higher SPF, it really lasted all day. We were wondering if it just became less potent as the day wore on, but still was sufficient. We were generally out for a good 6+ hours at the beach/pool and we didn't burn.

Hope you have as good a time as we did!!

I use 30x and it is just perfect.
15 would be better for the last days only...
