DH loves his coffee and drinks a carafe by himself. He likes it very hot and prefers a 10 or 12 cup programmable coffee maker that has a stainless steel carafe. He has a burr grinder now and uses whole beans.

This is for an XMAS gift . I was all set to buy a Cuisinart today until I read customer reviews about no pause button, the carafe not keeping it hot (need to preheat with hot water) and filter spillage issues.

I am a tea lover so I would appreciate the coffee brewer opinions.

Thank You

He has a Gevalia coffeemaker with a plastic thermal carafe. It tends to leak. It's not programable but he does not have to preheat it. The one cup at a time would never do as the man takes a 36-48 oz travel mug on the way to work(long commute). On weekends drinks the entire pot in a couple of hours.

I think you will find that you need to charge virtually all the carafes with hot water for optimal temperature hold.

If he likes hot, hot coffee, why not get him one of those new ones I've seen that make up to 12 cups of coffee "on demand." You fill it once, and then press a button throughout the day to get a cup of coffee brewed and instantly poured to your mug. That might be the best solution.

Cuisinart

Don't buy the Cuisinart! We have one, with a large stainless steel carafe, and it is difficult to use. If everything isn't fit together exactly right the coffee spills out all over the sink. That has happened a number of times despite our best efforts to get it just right. i think part of the problem is that most of the unit is plastic (except the carafe).
I'm using my wife's French Press until I find a replacement unit.
I paid a pretty hefty price for the Cuisinart. In the good old days products were made of steel and they fit together properly and lasted for years. Oh well.

We've had two Cuisinarts. They make great coffee. We had the same leakage problem with the first, which was replaced. Now, the carafe doesn't seem to be keeping in the heat. I suspect the heating element isn't heating the water the way it used to. But, I'm not sure who to blame. We had a dog-sitter (a young girl) that tried to run chocolate thru the unit...I think that wrecked it. Her Mother offered a replacement. It was full of gunk...but, I declined after I cleaned it. That was a mistake.

We had a GE one from Target that had the same problems as the Cuisinart you're talking about. The carafe had to be warmed with hot water or the coffee was depressingly cold, PLUS if everything wasn't aligned just exactly right, it would pour the coffee all over the counter. After about a year of nursing it along, I finally kicked it to the curb (literally).

Now I'm using a cheapo Procter Silex from Eckerd that actually makes better coffee. It has a glass carafe and a heating element, so I have to make coffee a couple of times during the day, but it's nice and hot.

i also have a proctor-silex($29.00)bought it at PC RICHARDS. it has an automatic timer and you can pour a cup before the coffee is finished brewing. it also keeps the coffee HOT!! it is actually the best coffee machine i have ever owned.

We have the Cuisenart Coffee On Demand which is about $100 on sale. It does not use a carafe but brews the coffee into an internal reservoir which has a heating element. It dispenses coffee into a cup by pressing down a button. Because of the heating element, it keeps the coffee pretty hot. As with any coffee, you don't want it sitting there for too many hours so it doesn't get bitter. A word about the Cuisinart warranty; We had the machine for about two years when it stopped powering up. I called customer service. She asked for the serial number. When I told her she said she could tell by the number the machine was made less than three years ago and they didn't even need a copy of my receipt. Two days later UPS delivered a new (not rebuilt as from some other manufacturers) machine. I did ship back my old machine as they had requested, though they did not wait for it to arrive before shippng the new one. If any of their products do the job I need it for, that's the brand I'll buy. They made a customer out of me.

We have the Cuisinart, and for me, the stainless steel carafe holds the coffee hot enough for a couple of hours without prewarming with hot water. It is temperamental about how the filter sits in place...if it's off just a bit the water doesn't drain into the pot correctly, overflows the filter and makes a mess. Of course, you can tell that it's not in place correctly if you look carefully when it's closed, but sometimes I don't think my eyes are completely open when I'm making coffee in the a.m.! I really like the stainless steel carafe much more than the glass pot on a heating element. The coffee doesn't get that burnt taste after an hour or two. It doesn't have a "pause switch" but if you remove the pot to pour a cup while it's brewing, the filter closes itself off so the coffee doesn't continue to run out. Of course, you need to replace the pot quickly so the filter basket doesn't overfill because hot water does continue to flow into the basket.

My coffee pot uses the cone shaped filters. I've had an occasional one fold on me, making a mess. So now I wet one side before I put it in; then it plasters to the side of the filter basket. No more problem! If only all life's problems were that easy to solve.

Well, you've actually just described to a T the latest Cuisinart model. We've had the original grind & brew for a few years now and have never had a problem with it. The only thing we don't like is the steam from the brewing cycle gunks up the grinding mechanism. It's a pain to clean. For that reason alone, I'd never get a grind & brew again.

I am currently in coffeemaker shopping mode, and will probably go with a krupps thermal carafe. My Krupps machine has held up well for 10years. It's just showing it's age. we also like anything Bunn.

Macy's will have 40% off all coffeemakers the day after Thanksgiving. But you didn't hear that here.

Highly recommend Capresso...Mine (MT500) is 3 years old, perfect hot cup of coffee. and yes, fill the caraf w/hot water 1st, I use my Insta-hot to fill caraf, spill it out then run coffee maker---perfect...enjoy :)

I love my cuisinart stianless carafe 12 cupper and it keeps the coffee steaming HOT- unlike any other machine I have ever had. It costs $100 or so but you can get them on Overstock.com for around $55. It says "refurbed" but it arrived brand spanking new. It does have a pause feature which allows you to pour without spilling. However, as others have said it is imperative to screw the cap on properly- once I put it on crooked and the coffee did not drip through because it did not line up properly, and the thing overflowed from the top. It is a great machine- and it has auto shut off after a few minutes. The carafe keeps the coffee in great condition for hours- and we all know that the other types of pots where the coffee sits and turns to sludge. I think coffee breaks down after 10 minutes on a hot plate? But not with this baby! I love it and I have bought two...
