as much as the hawaii beaches were beautiful, the pokey shells killed our feet compared to the socal beaches. We tried water shoes, but the shells/rocks just ended up in our shoes! We bought some water socks last summer, but they didn't last long and still ended up full of sand on the socal beach.

Any suggestions for our upcoming hawaii trip?

My wife uses aqua aerobics shoes. They look like tennis shoes, but are made to get wet and clean up easily. They give her the ankle support she needs when on the beach.

My scuba booties work really well to keep my foot safe from lava rock when shore diving. Nothing will get into the boot as they fit tight.

My husband and I got some really nice water shoes from Costco. Much better than the ones we've had in the past.

I'm a big fan of Merrell and Keen.
Both companies make a water shoe that you might like. The shoes look like sneakers, but are actually constructed with an open lycra-like mesh that easily drains water. They are designed to be worn wet-dry. The higher footbed, toe and heel etc... tend to keep your foot above the worst of the loose sand/dirt and reduce sand build-up. Of course, if you bury your foot in the sand....they will get sandy. Eventually they collect some dirt/sand and may require a rinse. It's the rocks and shells that hurt and they keep those out.

Available at ebay/Amazon and lots of shops. Closeouts are cheaper.
Just google Merrell or Keen "water shoes" (and men or women)

cheers
