Hi guys . I am new to the Marriott world via Westin and am looking to book a vacation summer 2024 in Hilton Head. I noticed there is a lot of properties ! With varying points levels. Any tips ? I have up to 6200 points to burn and will be booking 13 months out. I like to golf my wife hates golf. Traveling with our two kids (in their 20’s) . They like being on the beach and drinking LOL

I like Monarch. It's an intimate complex of five smaller buildings right on the beach. It's in Sea Pines which is a gated community on the south end of the island with lots of walking/biking paths and fewer cars. There's a golf course right across the road so you could golf while the wife and kids enjoy the beach. The two bedroom units are on the smaller side compared to some of the bigger complexes but still plenty of room.

I just realized this site has resort reviews. Buying a membership lol.
Why are some resorts like ocean watch worth so many more points ? Newer??

Newer is typically more points. Heritage is (I believe) the only Marriott that includes free golf, but it is an older property in Sea Pines. If you are at Heritage Club, you can play up to 12 rounds at a group of courses on HHI. It is not on the beach but near Harbour Town (across the street from the clubhouse). With that said, I think the nicest Marriott "resort" on the island is Grande Ocean. Ocean Watch is in Myrtle.

For us it's Grande Ocean. It's on the beach, gets Sea Pines passes, is nicer than most and it's centrally located for most of the options including walking distance or an easy bike ride to restaurants and other options. Monarch is smaller with smaller units (twins in the second BR) and is older but it is on the beach. Barony and Surfwatch are the other 2 on the beach and are very nice but they are a distance away from most options on the island though with a car it shouldn't be a big deal. Grande Ocean will be the most difficult to book and getting anything at 13 months out is difficult but you'll have another chance at 12 months out. Just be there when reservations open up.

There are four HHI resorts on the beach, Barony and Surfwatch to the north end, and Grande Ocean and Monarch to the south end. Monarch is actually inside the Ocean Pines resort/development which gives you free access to Harbourtown and all of the bike trails.

Monarch is the smallest with the fewest amenities (no on-site food/bar/grill, but the Sea Pines Beach Club is right next door)...the other three all have multiple pools and on-site food beverage places. Surfwatch has a dune-top bar and grill with a pool that you access across a walkway over a tidal marsh, Barony is more contained and Grande Ocean is the largest and has a really big footprint.

I wouldn't even consider the other four for your purposes...Heritage and Harbour Club are in Harbourtown, Sunset and Harbour Point are in Shelter Cove.

I'd pick one of the big three for your first trip there (Barony, Surfwatch, or Grande Ocean). Don't pick Garden View for Barony as it doesn't feel like it's part of the main resort. The Garden View buildings at Surfwatch are a little better but are pretty far from the beach. Point costs should be the same for all three.

Check out YouTube by searching each resort. Lots of videos out there to give you an idea of what the resorts look like and what amenities they have.

How is trading on interval for grand ocean in the summer? Is it as difficult as booking with points?

@Dean just snagged one.

There aren't many (especially like mid-June to early-August) but if you put in requests with a high enough trade power unit you'll be likely to get something.

I have a ton of experience trading and trying to trade to MGO for week 25 & 26 +/- 27 but mostly week 26. I routinely have 1 or more Marriott to Marriott exchange requests going done 1 year or more in advance, usually more than 1 request and usually before 14 months out. I'm using traditional MVC traders, mostly Willow Ridge though I've used Legend's Edge, GV & HL as well always the best TDI for each resort. Other than 2020, when I got 5 units on exchange, I've gotten 1 most years and none a couple of years. I seem to recall one year I may have gotten 2. One of these was on a priority search because II made a mistake. I generally get them 4-6 months out but sometimes under 60 days. I think one can expect a similar experience weeks 24-30 though just having the option of more weeks will increase the chances of success a fair amount. Being open to August and early June will make it much easier. Still, there's no reason not to try though I would not put ONLY MGO unless I was prepared not to match. For us we have other units the same resort and week and are either looking for additional volume or to substitute the exchange for a direct reservation and either rent it or more likely, cancel and use the points later.

Hmm that’s interesting. I would be using a Vistana week to trade so that might be more difficult in my situation. I have points but it looks like that is difficult too. It’s quite expensive to buy though.

Oh and August to early June is fine too actually preferred as it may not be as crowded. Waiting less than 6 months to find out if it went thru might be hard.

IMO using MVC points is challenging but far easier than getting an exchange through II, at least using a medium level demand unit as I described above. On top of that with Vistana I don't think you'd have the Marriott to Marriott preference. It you truly want to go I'd list all resorts you are OK with and all weeks you can accept. As a minimum it's be Barony, MGO, Surfwatch and Monarch, and for us, that'd be all we'd list even if just going for that week and a single unit.

no preference for Vistana folks. Will try all resorts you listed for next year and check with points at 13 months. That is a driving location for us and we really like grand ocean when we went on an encore package. Thanks for the advice .

If you can book with MVC points you could then try for an exchange to replace that reservation.

There was a flyer that was sent to Vistana owners posted to the II community announcing that they now had “preferred access over other II members” to MVC properties in January 2020.

Red elephant put in your request now, include as many resorts and dates as you can.

Late Aug (once kids are heading back to school) and Sept are relatively easy trades for Hilton Head. I routinely see them available for an instant exchange without ever needing an ongoing search, so if you put in an OGS for that time frame you are very likely to get a match. Might be a bit tougher without Marriott preference, but I would say the odds are still pretty good. Same for Mar-May timeframe. Nov-Feb you can likely get a cheap getaway if you want to go any of those months and not have to trade at all as the demand is pretty low then as the weather will be cold.

Vistana does have a preference period on the end of the Marriott to Marriott priority, but I suspect any of these deposits would be snapped up by Marriott owners before making it to the extra preference period for Vistana owners.

True but is it on par with other MVC members or just ahead of non MVC members, my understanding was the latter but I could see it changing?

It is certainly not equal. In following the sightings there are frequently Marriott deposits that cannot be seen with Vistana weeks and vice versa.

That was my understanding and thus I don't see it being helpful in this exact situation.

No it is not on par with MVC, but it is ahead on others.
it is certainly worth requesting.

Hmmm looks like can try for August/ September less crowds . the ocean is not warm enough in May for me. Put in an on going search and book with points then can cancel if the search comes thru like @Dean said .

For mid June through mid August, it's unlikely any unit will make it through the MVC priority for the top 4 other than under 60-90 days. Certainly Sept after the holiday will be a much more likely time for success and it's a great time to go. Still, if you don't try you won't have any chance of success so I see no downside as long as one plan accordingly.
