Does anyone have a hotel/motel chain they like as a timeshare alternative? Looking for atleast coffee maker in unit, breakfast included is a plus and a clever way to take advantage of rewards, perks, etc.

We enjoy IHG most have free breakfast. My husband used them for business travel and they are part of Holiday Inn Vacation Club. We used to have a timeshare at Orange Lake and converted some points to use at the hotels.

I have had a good experience with them in the past as well and am thinking that may be my path forward as an empty nester. Thank you.

Many Hilton Homewood and Marriott Residence Inns are considered "extended stay" hotels and include a kitchen in the units. Many of these include a breakfast and possible a evening happy hour, at least a few days a week.

I really have no brand loyalty. I go with whoever has the best price for the location and amenities I may want. I use Marriott, IHG and Hilton (although not so much Hilton lately).

If you are interested in using hotel points, Hyatt requires the fewest points per stay.

I pretty much have all of my hotel points roll over to one of my airlines programs. I don't stay regularly at any one hotel chain often enough to build up enough points.

I think Hampton Inn always has a breakfast, and many other Hilton chain properties do, but check the specific location of course. I tend to like their rewards cards, I find the Surpass to work well for the annual fee and the status gets you extra free stuff like waters or breakfast at ones that don't include it. The free night certificates are really good, and I'm very rarely disappointed in a Hilton property and they almost always have a location and availability. The Aspire works good if you also have HGVC and can pay the MFs with it cause then the statement credit for resort spend makes up for the otherwise high annual fee, and then you can get up to 3 free night certificates so that's pretty good. You can get some cross benefit there if you're also in HGVC.

Your only problem with using an extended stay property from any of the major brands is that they tend to be somewhat pricy compared to a regular hotel room. This because they are frequently used by companies to house employees and the hotel can get away with charging higher rates for this. You can still probably rent a timeshare for less.

Thank you! Have never heard of Surpass.

I look at the total cost of staying there. A VRBO or AirBnb might cost more. It also might cost less. But if it has a kitchen and I can cook breakfast and dinner that is almost certainly going to pay for itself.

Besides, most hotel rooms are dreary.

Glad to let you know. I've been a happy user of Surpass (and it's Citi predecessor) since 2008. I tend to like the Hilton Honors program as it's pretty easy to use. Properties cost varies a lot, but in places like Allentown a Hampton is ~35,000 pts, in NYC Times Square the Doubletree is like 95,000pts and I'd say most are generally 70,000pts so that can help you compare to other systems. These are all standard room rewards, there are upgrades for suites, but those are "insane" pts costs to me. The 5th night of a points stay is free, so that's cool.

But for me, the best part is the free night reward - It's just that. There are no blackout dates, you can use it at a Hampton or a Hilton or pretty much any property. I recall comparing other systems, and their reward nights were more limited - certain tiers of properties, or you got a "free night" each year that was actually a number of points, which again limited where you could use it. I know the HHonors reward stay is no joke, my sister also has this and used one to stay at a Hilton property in Times Square on new year's eve. It was $2,500 for the night cash, but a free reward for her.

On the cash side - Hilton's aren't the cheapest, but they do have competitive rates IMO. More than that however, they tend to have something where you're going. It's very rare that there is NO Hilton property, even "out in the boonies" which greatly complements timeshares.

The downsides I think is mainly the progressing loss of even mini-fridges in the rooms, and they certainly cost more than timeshares if you want or need 2 BR. However, I also think this might be most hotels.

I have to admit, it's a bit of a mindset change to plan to cook on vacation. Eating out multiple times a day was always part of the vacation experience. However, once I got into timesharing and actually started looking this way, it is an important added cost. Any meal you eat in is likely to save you at least $60 for multiple people. I know for 3 people even at take out places it's easy to hit $75 a dinner and $40 a lunch. Even just having the fridge you can bring back leftovers can often save a bundle cause many meals at a restaurant are actually enough for 2 meals.

I cook on vacation because it's fun. I have access to things I don't at home. Often, we travel JUST for access to the good stuff -- Hatch chilis, abalone, Dungeness crabs, everything in Italy, France, Spain and Portugal.

I visit Costco in Hawaii roughly once a month. Why? I like real maple syrup and actual parmigiano reggiano as much as the next person. Actually, probably a great deal more than the next person. Every time I go there, I see tourists making what I consider the most egregious mistake -- buying all the same boxed ultra-processed food they get at home.

How was Hawaii? "Great!" What did you eat there? "Costco Corn Dogs! A whole case of 'em! Two people. Twenty-eight corn dogs. That's two corn dogs a day for a whole week!"

Thats true, but it also depends on what your looking for. If you just want a night or two then an extended stay hotel can offer a good solution. They are also have a lot more locations in non-resort areas and can work really well there.

But if you want a week or close to that then a timeshare is probably a good solution.

Since the OP specifically asked about hotels on a timeshare forum, I assumed there was not a good timeshare option.

Thank you. Single empty nester, looking at options for future travel as TS fees increase and quality exchange options decrease due to aging resorts. Usually have nice lunch/linner out and then something simple in evening. I also do often drive to TS with hotel stops along the way.

Oh, yea, I can see how Hotels work more than fine for one person traveling alone. I guess aside from if you're making content for Youtube, or really really want to cook, I can't fathom what a TS does for you a hotel room does not. For me it's about privacy and 2 bathrooms when going with 3 or more people total. When it was just 2 people, or just myself, a normal hotel room does it for short stays. I can now see the timeshare / having a kitchen saving me money on eating however. I think those extended stay or some suites are the only hotels that would have any sort of kitchen though.

Hotels work for us when it's a short stay (a night or two), or when there are no timeshare options where we are going, or if there are timeshare options but we're not able to get something.

We prefer staying at Hilton or Marriott brands.

Hilton brands with free breakfast...
-- Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn, Homewood, Home2 Suites & Tru.

Marriott brands with free breakfast...
-- Residence Inn, SpringHill Suites, Fairfield Inn & Towne Place Suites

Otherwise, elevated membership status earns a free breakfast.

For Hilton, I can say the Surpass and Aspire card get you the elevated status, so depending on how much you value the breakfasts and how many days you travel, the $150 annual fee of the Surpass might just be an equal for extra free breakfast at Hiltons. I also need to check out a Tru because their nightly rate is cheap compared even to Hampton Inns.

Element is another Marriott brand with free breakfast. Residence Inn, Townplace Suites, and Element brands all have kitchens with a two burner cooktop, microwave, dishwasher, and full size refrigerator. I have cooked many a vacation meal in a Marriott Residence Inn. Homewood Suites and Home 2 Suites also have full kitchens. I am less familiar with their brands; however, I am pretty sure Hyatt also has equivalent extended stays suite hotels with kitchens.
