Best Cancun Restaurants

From our trip last week:

Italian - Casa Rolandi ... excellent, there was 8 in our party, everyone raved about their meal, very good service

Mexican/Mayan - Hacienda Sisal or La Parilla downtown

Steak-Seafood - El Conquistador @ The Royal Mayan, as good as everyone says it would be, good service, surprisingly not that expensive

Enjoy!

Is the Casa Rolandi in the hotel zone? Thanks for the info.

Yes...in Plaza Caracol near the Riu Hotel.

We loved the japanese restaurant in the Marriott hotel. Much better quality than other 'Benihana' type places, and excellent sushi, too.

Speaking of the Marriott, one of our favorites is the Lobster Buffet at the JW. I think it is Sun,Wed, and Fri.

Another big yes vote for La Habichuela! Call for reservations in advance and request seating in the courtyard. :whoopie:

It all depends on what you like. There are many great and varied restaurants in Cancun and only a few that are not so good. Don't be afraid to discover a gem as some of the best I've eaten at are nearly unknown. I've always felt that La Habituela was overrated unless you go for the atmosphere. La Parilla (downtown) has been consistently pleasing, Pericos is great for a fun party-type place. Savios and La Fisheria (Plaza Caracol) are always on our agenda. If you stay at the Royals- save a night for El Conquistador at the Royal Mayan.

we like to just walk around and let our noses be our guide. I don't know that I've ever had a bad meal in Cancun. On our trip a couple weeks ago here are a few places we ate at and enjoyed:

Viva la Vaca - moderately priced, a argentine style beef (very tasty), as well as seafood, chicken, paella, etc (near convention center across from la fiesta store), small & friendly, consistently good. very casual

Casa Tequila - moderately priced, a wide choice of menu selections and a HUGE tequila menu. small & friendly. (next to viva la vaca) very casual. PS: XQ Grand Reserve Tequila ... ohhh myyyyy.

Puerto Madero - more expensive. Nice location, beautiful outdoor bar area, awesome steaks & seafood. they say they are casual, but we felt next time we'll dress a bit better.

La Ruina - cheap eats. Mexican and Yucatecan food. Consistiently good food. (plaza terramar, across from RUI)

other places we've like on past trips: Lorenzillo's - expensive. Love dining under the stars on the dock section. Not so fond of dining indoors. Lorito Joe's known for the all u can eat lobster or shrimp buffets (on friday thru sunday). La Distilleria - moderate to expensive (depending on how much tequila you try) mexican food. In La Isla Mall (shopping works up an appetite), Casa Margarita, Mr. Papa's (cheap and lots), Starbucks for when you absolutely need that dopio, and Johnny Rockets for when you need that milkshake fix.

ok I'll stop now. I'm hungry.

We have been going to Cancun for 12 years now have been going to Pericos for about 6 or 7 of those years. I think we started going because of this board and recommendations from TUG members. Needless to say, we absolutely love this restaurant! We travel to Cancun every year with a large party, anywhere from 12 to 20 in our party and have all ages in our group (ages from 6 to 70). This is the one restaurant that the whole group loves and equally has a great time. It's a great family experience.

That being said..... the past 2 years we had a problem with our bill. Last year we had a party of 12 and when the bill came the waiter was telling us that we owed just a little over $1000. I was shocked because we had a few children in our party. The bill was hand written and you couldn't understand what he wrote down or what price was for which meal. It was a bunch of scribble. My father and I are Mexican and my father speaks fluent Spanish. He tried to talk to the waiter but the waiter keep going over and over the figures as if my dad was unaware of how much we really ate and drank. My father tried to follow what he was saying but he keep repeating the same thing over and over and spoke very fast. He didn't really answer any of my fathers questions and my dad just gave up. Also he wouldn't really give my dad a straight answer about whether the tip was included or not. My husband was really pissed because this had happened to us the previous year but we just chalked it up to drinking too many margaritas and figured we had a really good time anyway. We will be in Cancun in 10 days and the children/teenagers in our group will be very anxious to return there. They really love it. I'm not really sure how we will handle the situation again if it happens or if we will even attempt to go there again. I'm really torn because it's a great place but I refuse to get ripped off again. My father and husband want to go just to see if they can win the argument this year.
One last comment...... for several years we had a waitress by the name of Rozio or Roxio (sorry, something like that) and we never had this problem but the past 2 years (week 40) she was off or on vacation the day we went.

My favs: Puerto Madero - great Argentinian steak house. Ate there twice in one week last year.
Italian - La Dolce Vita (owned by the same restaurant group as Savios and La Fisheria)
For fun: Senior Frogs or Carlos 'n Charlies. Hope the Frog is back in action.
For seafood and atmosphere: Lorenzillo's
Japanese: The Mikado at the Marriott
La Madonna - at La Isla (hope it's back, too) a GREAT martini bar

All in the Hotel Zone - enjoy!

The buffet at the JW Marriott is truly worth the $$$ around 50 pp but they will serve as many lobster tails as you like. This is a treat for us & we do it every time we visit. Laura

It is a good idea to have someone who hasn't had much to drink examine the bill carefully, no matter where you eat. I've had the "gringo" tax added in several ways including an adding machine tape which had a bigger total than the sum of the items. I spent about 45 minutes arguing over a bill for 4 of us once- I won.

Exactly! in 2004 we chalked it up to too much tequila! But last year we were determined to stay sober to not have the same mistake happen again. WE LOST! We got the same waiter and had the SAME problem. We finally got the manager and he took off some items but it still wasn't what we expected. We gave up! It was too crowded and noisey and everyone was tired. It's really hard to argue with all that going on and have 16 people waiting for you. It's just not right. I am giving them one more chance next week and if my bill is even the slightest bit off I am going to be really pissed. We are big tippers and you don't have to rip people off to make money.

How sad is it that a few people in your group have to stay sober or not drink at all to make sure you don't get ripped off? And we are not the only ones. I read a similar story on Tripadvisor and then posted my experience along with a lot of other people who got ripped off there too! It's a true shame because the kids in our family love it there and look forward to it every year.
