hi--hopefully this is the correct forum category to post this....

Looking to book a week in a timeshare in the riviera maya area in Mexico. Would like a all inclusive place, and would prefer a 5 star type experience. We are traveling with 2 kids, and are looking for timeshare rentals because it might be easier to find a large room or suite for a better price than going through the hotel.

We need at least two beds, not doubles (I'm tall), a nice beach, great food, and kids activities.

Any suggestions?

IMHO, you're probably better off just booking directly with the resort or tripadvisor/etc. Most timeshares are exchanges into the resort the a lot of times the AI fees themselves are more than what you could book directly for.

Occasionally I get offers for the high-end ones (Azul or something) but they're usually down by Tulum, and they're usually around like $1200-$1800 for both people (plus the exchange, so that's about another $700-800) and you have to meet certain requirements (income and attend the timeshare sales).

If you book direct, I'd say probably Iberostar or the Grand Palladium, but they may be more Playa Del Carmen/Tulum area vs. Cancun.

IF you want 5-star.

I'm sure there are others like maybe the Riu (or is it Rui?)??

I also agree to book direct, my favorite is the Barcelo Palace in Rivera Maya

2nd the rental/package deal vs trade/exchange

We stayed at Playas Sandecar a few years ago....
Had a marvy time.
Free sailboat rentals, pool checkout on scuba/snorkel etc...
booked a special on the upgraded (royal or something?) package and access to extra areas, chairs, pools, restaurants etc...

It was a very good experience.
RM is SOooooo much better than Cancun and all that.
We really enjoyed going to the pyramid down there...drove our own rental car and biked into the jungle.

Google cheap Caribbean or something similar (wink) and you'll find some good specials. There are better places than Sandos now, I think.
The key to our success was the suites/family suites that they had. Many of the resorts have suite/villa accommodations available for rent (and on special) that are very cheap.

Good luck.

I did A LOT of research on this for our spring break vacation March 2015.

It was absolutely less expensive not to use the timeshare points. I wound up finding a great deal on Expedia and then went to a travel agent and had her match the price.

We took our three kids to Ocean Coral and Turquesa in April a couple years ago. They loved it. Food was good. Rooms were nice. About $5000 for whole family of 5 including airfare, transfers, all food, lodging, and 2 excursions. That was for a Jr. Suite so not a 2 bedroom. I can't beat this price using a timeshare so I definitely recommend booking through Travelocity or another site instead of exchanging.

I do have an exchange for one of the Royals resorts that isn't an all inclusive in 2017 but may retrade it as my kids loved the all inclusive and I can use that exchange for something else.

If you can hook up with someone here on TUG who owns Palace or Hard Rock resorts, you can't beat booking through them. *I am not an owner, so I can't help* Owners can "sell" one of their weeks to you to use, and the AI fees are usually a bit lower than you can get at the travel sites. Owner's benefits convey onto the guest, so each person gets two free tours, free back massage, manicure and pedicure, r/t airport transportation and resort credits. Hard Rock's are unlimited - you get about $1800 per room credit, which you can spend completely at the spa, on golf, tours, all sorts of things, but you do have to pay a 20% tax that they say is imposed by the Mexican govt. Palace Resorts give you about $1500 resort credits and limits spa use to $300 and has some restrictions on other things, and Mexico only charges 16% :hysterical: to use the credits at Palace. The resorts are really nice, the food very good with lots of restaurants on site, at the larger resorts you won't be able to visit them all in one week, liquor top-shelf - we've stayed at several of the resorts and loved them all and hope to go back again some day soon.

Edited to add: Palace/Hard Rocks have "kids go free" deals - Palace just extended theirs for some of their resorts through October.

Check out Sandos Playacar or Sandos Caracol. They have 2 bedrooms and are fantastic for kids.
