Vistana voluntary resale has an Interval Fee.

Are these free Vistana mandatory exchanges that are 0? (but must pay annual fees?)
Having been studying TUG prior to the integration of Vistana in Abound, we picked up enough mandatory resales for a song to be Chairman’s Club when integrated. They are all enrolled, including a couple Lagunamar weeks I got for free after the integration and requalified.

The same is true for MVC resale weeks (unless you enroll them in which case they are covered by your MVC annual dues).

I assume II Vistana to Marriott/Vistana trades on retro'd Vistana resale weeks are free (or at least covered by the annual dues) but don't actually know.
They are.

Own 11,200 Platinum Vegas. Happy with the amount—wouldn’t change it.

If I could go back, I would’ve been more patient and waited for a BHC 1:32 HH conversion at the right price. Never been to my home resort, and I’ve never used RCI.

I would’ve started using HGV every other year—using the current year’s points plus borrowing from the next, then using Hilton Honors points the year after. That would’ve stretched the value more.

I also would’ve signed up for 2 Aspire and 2 Surpass cards much earlier. The credits help cover maintenance fees, and we earn 4 Free Night Certificates plus solid points throughout the year.

For sales presentations, I always ask for 80K–100K Hilton points. Never accept less. If they’re not offering that, I don’t go.

Wouldn’t change the brand or point amount—just would’ve been more strategic from the start.

YMMV This is what works for our travel patterns and budget. You may have different locations, budgets and quality preferences.

Would you go back and change your "home" location?
We bought retail 10 years ago and regretted that. We bought resale and have benefited greatly. Currently have 5.5 weeks across HGVC and Vistana because you cannot have just one. :)

We sold 1 resale VOI to adjust our portfolio to a better one.

Would you buy more/less points?

I am pretty happy with our current mix. Currently playing with Interval International (II) and Vistana SO points that were more recently acquired and may sell a Vistana that we use due to high MF because we are tiring of the location, it is too expensive to trade, and we are on the verge of having too many.

Would you use RCI more/less often?
We have gotten a few gems e.g. Four Seasons Vilamoura Portugal but mostly trade in-system points, DEX and II. RCI has gotten increasingly expensive with resort fees tacked on making in-system trades a better value for the quality. RCI has a lot 3 star resorts including Wyndham vs. HGVC 4 star. Why trade your Cadillac for a VW Golf?

Would you sign up for the Hilton credit cards to get more HH points?

Yes. And we pay MF for these. Great for augmenting trips with extra nights.

Would you attend more/less sales presentations to try and get more free points in your HH account?

Fewer. We were using these to get discounted stays but now realized that with our resale timeshares that trade in II and DEX that we can get better value exchanging and then take HHonors or other offers as they arise at the resort. Pretty high bar for us these days.

Would you use a different company (not use Hilton) for your TS travels?

We own both HGVC deeds and Vistana with SO points and II trading. These systems complement each other with different locations. II trading is valuable to access Marriott, Hyatt Disney properties. SO points is best for in-system Westin and Sheraton trades.

What would be your ideal starter point/location deal?

HGVC Vegas or Craigendarroch Lodges Scotland for HGVC deeds
We also own NYC because we like to go there so would pickup a resale there.

Outside HGVC to complement:
(free) Sheraton Desert Oasis to trade in II for MVC and Vistana if you can vacation for a week at a time. IMHO II Is better than RCI because you can access Marriotts and some Hyatt and Disney.
Westin Kierland (mandatory SO points) for use in the Vistana system (costs money)

If you want to discuss any of these options in detail, please PM me.
I started with something we loved which was a resale in Kona. Love the property and the price was good but MF are, no doubt, high. The remainder of our purchases have been Craig Lodges where we have seen the absolutely best bang for our buck. Great consistent price, low closing fees, MF that are among the lowest, qualify for Elite status, AND great flexibility with access to both DEX and RCI, in addition to HGVC. I don’t regret where we started but I have toyed with the idea of selling the Hawaii we started with as we don’t often book our homeweek.

We own Flamingo Las Vegas but have gold season. I would have bought Premium season so I’d get double the points for the same MF. The up front costs are not that much of a difference.

So buy the most points you can in lower category. So buy a premium 1 bedroom versus a silver 2 bedroom. Lretty
Much the same points but lower MF

Do not purchase a timeshare; learn how to rent a timeshare; without paying yearly maintenance fees, Club fees and exchange fees.

Young Bill, do not attempt to eat breakfast and go snorkeling after a long night of tequilla shots at the Cabo Wabo. Contrary to what your friends said, more tequilla only made it worse.

Renting works sometimes, esp at some over-developed markets like LAS, MCO etc

Owning gives you 1st dibs; Elite status gives you lots of flexibility & takes away most of pesky fees (except MFs); if structured well, TS's are an amazing way to vacay...
Wish I got in many years ago, when I could have had more time with my loved ones, but all good.
Happy with my modest purchase(s) and look forward to many years of happy use (until it's time to move on)...

Agree on first dibs. if you are willing to do your homework the right resales are an excellent way to hack low cost travel in condo size units with oceanfront views or ski resort access.

Cruises and renting are less risky and but are a lot more expensive. We would not be traveling much at all if we did not have our timeshares.

In retirement, we actually divested 2 summer HHI weeks because we now prefer cruising. We can usually get a 7+ day for about $2,500 on Princess/Celebrity/Royal Carib. With TS/RCI/II fees and eating out, our all in is $2K+. Ironic because I kept those 2 TS for trading "for traveling in retirement."
However, for our years of travel with a family, timesharing was the bomb! Lots of space, full kitchen, gorgeous resorts, and huge money-savings over hotels.

I have enjoyed this thread--it's very wise advice for any TS system. This was my fav post!

"Don't rely on RCI. Don't "buy a trader" and then get into the situation of "only OK vacations that took a lot of effort""
TSs we own = "v good vacations that took almost no effort & save 33% or more"
RCI ?=? "only OK vacations that took a lot of effort ... but saved 50%"? count me out

What size of cabin do you get for $2,500?

I like your way of thinking.

And this is why the travel industry has so many options. Those enormous cruise ships hold no appeal for us, although much smaller cruises are interesting. We bought extra points at a good deal before retirement for use now...and now we need a few more :)

The advice coming out of this is, unless you get a screaming deal, don't buy the extra retirement points too early as some may go to waste in the interim. Good deals will be out there.

Cheers.

We get an Oceanview (sometimes slightly obstructed) or balcony. Cabins are 175-225 sq feet. These are not luxury suites. It's close quarters with small bathrooms, but it works for fun/sun in winter and as floating hotel for Europe, etc.
HGVC, DVC, and a few cruises thrown in works well for us. Our TS portfolio has had almost 100% turnover of 7 properties over the years as life/plans/travel tastes have changed; my mantra now is "buy something with an easy exit."

This question would be a great one just in general for all timeshare systems. I know that my opinion has changed many times over the years. Some changes to various systems have led me to be very negative on those systems. RCI, I am 100%, absolutely totally negative. Was I always this negative? Not at all. I used to love RCI, and not just because of Disney being in RCI for so long.

I loved exchanges into Hiltons, which now have ridiculous fees charged by Hilton. I have never been on a Hilton presentation and will probably never go because I would have nothing nice to say about a $25 per day fees. RCI exchange fees of $299 + $175 for Hilton fees and for what? I pay an exchange fee of $164 for Marriott-Westin and no fees at the resorts.

RCI exchange fees increased astronomically over the last five years. This makes me want to dump everything we own in RCI, but we cannot do it for now. We have huge numbers of points in RCI from Wyndham (after Wyndham stopped allowing us to rent) two in PIC, we have 1 in PFD, Mansfield and Fox Hills (Mishicot, WI) in RCI points, and we have our Val Chatelle summer weeks in RCI.

I love Sheraton and Marriott for the trading power and the preference into those systems. All Sheratons, all Marriotts that we own are golden. Still, after buying four OFC Westin weeks, we have way too many Sheratons and Marriotts and are selling half of what we own.

Got rid of Grand Palms, glad to be done with that. I had someone who rented a summer week from me every year, and I think he is going to be very disappointed, but I tried to get him to buy the last week we had, and he decided to just rent. Other owners will rent to him.

Hono Koa had a great MF when we started, now it's $3,258 to stay in our 2 bedroom unit. At least it's oceanfront, but so expensive compared to even Westin.

*Hilton/HGVC, as owner, with Vegas/CL deed, gives us a week in a 2 BR in (Kohala Suites) Waikoloa, Hawaii for $800'ish in September, with 1st dibs as HGVC owner.
No-brainer for a nice 2 BR in Hawaii & much cheaper than Marriott, WynDumb/WM, Hyatt etc...
