We have just returned from three weeks at the new and improving Playa del Sol Grande which is now the BelAir Vallarta Resort & Spa. We have been members since 2003 and were very disappointed at the decline of this family orientated resort. We are very happy to report that they are upgrading the rooms, grounds, restaurants and spa. We were there in October and yup even hit the hurricane! The resort called us together for an update and prepared us for what was expected of them and us. They even served us a snack and drink. Luckily, the hurricane didn't do any damage. We were happy to see the new pillows and mattress toppers. Our rooms had new tvs and appliances. The rooms are decorated to give you the feeling you are in a spa. There are white filmy drapes everywhere. The bathroom also has the filmy curtains with big fluffy towels. Very nice.
The food was very good altho the prices have went up. They do offer an all inclusive package. There were lots of families taking advantage of it. The more exclusive restaurant is in the process of renovation. They plan on having it open in November. Ship Wreck Kellys and Palm Terrace were open and included a new chef. They have also added a sushi and martini bar at the far end of the pool. The service was a little slow but October is a slow time so hopefully they will have more help coming in. Those waiters deserve every tip they get!!!
The pool and beach areas now have new loungers and cabannas by the pool. They have added 2 more whirlpools that are shaded. Very nice after a long walk or long day. The pool area has been given the look of a very nice spa, too. They were adding the filmy drapes around the area when we left.
They have expanded the little grocery store and made the previous store into a boutique with clothing and odds and ends. The grounds are beautiful with someone improving something everyday we were there.
We saw all the regular worker bees that are there every year. They welcome and make you feel as if you are coming home!
In talking to our member services rep she said that they are striving to put the PDSG behind them. They had some major miss management of our mantanence fees. She said the owner in the states did not realize what was going on with management until it was too late. She said they had even bought themselves an airplane. No wonder the place was going to the dogs! We did pay our 2012 fees because you get 5% off by paying before 11-15. You need to pay the BelAir not ResortCom to get the break. Yes, the maintenance fees did jump again. Member service said that the PDSG still has control of those in 2012. She said hopefully, things will change when the BelAir takes full control.
This is a smaller boutique resort with affliations in Cabo and Cancun. We enjoy the smaller resorts where you get to know people and make friends. We are already looking forward to October 2012. Hope we see you there!
