You apparently now have to go around the resort (street side) to get to Whaler's Village from MOC. I imagine this will eventually be repaired, but my guess is that it'll take a while for the county to address it.
There is a $11 million beach re-nourishment project that the State of Hawaii has funded for Kaanapali. They plan to move excess sand from an underwater sand bar up near Black Rock down to the beach near the Hyatt, Marriott, and Alii and the rest of the beach. Last I heard it was supposed to be fully permitted and complete by sometime in 2024. While the Governor and Mayor support the project, some locals (including the council-person representing West Maui) are threatening to sue to tie it up in court indefinitely. They also say they are planning civil disobedience to use their canoes and boats to block the work if need be. As best as I can understand from reading, they are pushing for something called "managed retreat," where all of the buildings on Kaanapali would be torn down and rebuilt closer to Honoapiilani Highway where the golf course is now.
Something like this happened about 15-20yrs ago. They packed the voids with sandbags, guyed the trees and reopened fairly quickly. Hopefully they'll do it again and it'll be OK for our trip in November, not going to hold my breath tho'.
As a matter of interest, who has jurisdiction here ?
I’m just guessing, but it would make sense that the beach walk is maintained by the Kaanapali Resort Property Regime, by the individual resorts it passes through, or some combination thereof. My perception has always been that the beach walk is on private property, not public property. The beaches in Hawaii are all public property, however, so I have no idea how local or state statutes and ordinances handle it when the public beach begins encroaching on private property.
