I'm looking for the "perfect" beach umbrella. I've used many over the years. Some are too top heavy. Other's are too flimsy. Right now, for the money, the Tommy Bahama umbrellas seem to work the best. I would, however, like to find a "good" 8 ft umbrellas as the Tommy Bahama's are 7 ft and just a tad too small. Anyone have any suggestions?

There really is no such h thing as the perfect beach umbrella. I've been on the hunt and they just all have flaws.

We bought one at Sam's few years ago and it has held up pretty well. The pole is aluminum so it's not very heavy to carry. The bottom of pole is like a screw to dig into the sand. On the top it has open slits on each panel so if the wind gets in, it goes thru. It has a nice cloth case with a strap. I don't remember the brand.

Alternative to beach umbrella...

I don't personally like to spend much time sitting / lying around on the beach, but acquired a "Sportbrella XL" to have on hand for protection from wind, windblown sand and sun when (...sometimes reluctantly) accompanying DW on her mission to "brown 'n bake" herself in the sun on the beach.

Sunbrella XL is freestanding, UV-protected material, no poles to have stick in the ground / sand. Much less subject to being uprooted and carried away by a gust of wind. It's almost like a dome tent cut right in half, leaving a completely open front. Bought it on line and had it delivered to the timeshare (from WalMart, if memory serves). No more expensive than a good quality umbrella and much better in many respects.
