My husband and I just got back from a week at WKORV last night. We had good luck with the weather -- hardly any rain at the resort, but quite humid with highs in the upper 80's. We did run into rain in the early afternoon, though, when we drove to Haleakala and to the Botanical Gardens that are near the beginning of the road to Hana (WAY to many sharp curves for me, even for just a few miles. I could never make it to Hana). WKORV is still in great shape, and we got almost the same villa that we got two years ago -- the far north end of building 4 (the island view building), fifth floor, with the balcony facing north toward WKORVN. However, if you look left from the balcony you get a beautiful view of the pool and the ocean, so it's really like an ocean view room for the price of an island view unit. Nice!

It wasn't crowded at all. WKORVN isn't fully open, so the pools over there were almost empty. The WKORV pool was also uncrowded with dozens of empty lounges. No wait at the poolside restaurant and bar. We looked at the restaurant at WKORVN which is now a buffet with a different theme every night (we didn't eat there because we're not big buffet people), but it will become a high-end full service restaurant when the entire complex is finished early next year. Owners at both WKORV and WKORVN get a 15% owners discount at this restaurant as well as the beach/poolside cafe at WKORVN, but the discount does not apply at the WKORV restaurant The spa is due to be open in February.

We spoke to Jennifer, the salesperson who sold us our WKORV unit in March 2004 because we wanted to ask a few questions about WKORVN but did NOT want to sit through the arm-twisting owner update (incentive for the update is 4,500 Starpoints). Here are the current prices and incentives to buy at WKORVN (she said they are about a month away from being sold out there):

2BR IV: $62,900, no Starpoint incentive (very few left)

2BR OV: $68,900 plus 175,000 Starpoint (yes, that's 175,000!). For an additional $1,675 they will give you an addtional 80,000 Starpoints (basically the price of one year's maintenance fees for 80,000 more Starpoints)

2BR OF: $89,900, no Starpoint incentive (very few left)

We're moving to Boston from Seattle next year, so we're still debating the best thing to do with our WKORV unit. We definitely won't be traveling from Boston to Maui very often, and we really can't see ourselves trading for Atlantis every year. We've considered selling, but since we only paid $34,900 it would really hurt to give it up considering the prices they are asking now and the price we would get to sell it. In the short term we will either rent it, convert to Starpoints, or trade it for Atlantis to see what that's like. We like to travel to Europe and the Starpoint value is higher there. But, we'll see.

Don't make any rash decisions.

We live on Long Island and travel to Maui AT LEAST once each year.

The bad part of the trip is the return. The red-eye is painful, but livable. Sometimes we split up the trip home.

Take a mid-day flight out of Maui. Stop in [airport name] and take a hotel. Depart on the first flight the next day. It doesn't cost a penny more for the flight. You probably have enough points for an airport Sheraton, so that's free. And you'll get home about 6PM on Sunday rather than 6AM.... big deal.

NOTHING... let me repeat that... NOTHING in the Carribean can hold a candle to the Hawaiian Islands. Anyone that says they are comparable has either never been to Hawaii or has some vested interest, like they already bought in [Carribean Island name] and it's too late now.

Mark my words. You'll be going back to Maui. It will be well worth the increased price of the tickets.

Wow, $89.9 for 2 bdrm OF at WKORV-N, plus ZERO incentive StarPoints. I'm feeling better about my resale purchase all the time. That's an incredible difference in price (42% less) and makes me wonder why they didn't exercise their RoFR when I bought in March of this year.

Catazog, we live in Cincinnati, OH and already have people lined up who want to use our villa. We originally planned to travel to Maui EOY but will probably end up going every year, alternating between a family trip and a couples-only trip. If I don't want to trade WkORV-N for another Westin property that's closer, then I'll offer it up to family members for the cost of MFs.

You might have better luck in Boston, but we had a very hard time finding reasonably priced fare with reasonable flight times to the Caribbean. The fares were comparable to Hawaii ($700) but the flight times were horrendous. I could have booked 2 SkySaver award tickets to Aruba for our couples trip this fall, along with a free hotel room at the Renaissance, but our return trip would have taken... (are you ready?) 23 hours! Um, no thanks.

Glad you had a good time in Hawaii and glad the property is holding up well.

Sorry the SVN pricelist saying the IV price for WKORV-N is $63K(sic) is totally bogus.

Who in the right mind would buy an IV unit in WKORV-N when you can buy 2 Oceanview units in WKORV for the same price ?

I think when the resorts are sold out SVN likes to mark-up their prices just to show their existing owners how much "profit" they have made !!

yes - this is my observation also - they may have a few 'on the books' at this price for anyone crazy enough to spend this. Our OF Dlx at WKORV was 'on the books' in the mid-80s last year (I saw these prices during the Owners Update) - when I asked why don't they use their ROFR in the low 50s and resell - I got a blank stare.

I really think it just a ploy to show how the SVO TS values increase over time.

Thanks for the advice KOR5star. We aren't making any decisions in the near term. We plan to rent out our unit next year since our moving date is uncertain, and then we'll see how things stand. Maui is gorgeous and I hate to think I'd never go back. We have considered making a one-night stopover on the way there or the way back -- it certainly would break up the trip!

I agree in holding off on selling and there are ways to cut off the long trip from the east coast. My in-laws live in PA and will be joining us in Maui EOY. They will either cut the trip up by coming to CA for a couple of days before flying on to Maui with us or this year, since we'll already be in Hawaii, they are going to stay in San Francisco for a day before continuing on to Maui. Or you could stay in Vegas a couple of days before going on to Maui...aaah the possibilities are endless :)

I don't see the need to break the trip on the trip West to Hawaii. That's an easy run. Typical flights depart at around 8AM. By 8PM (East Coast time), you're landing in Hawaii. Stay awake watching TV in your room until the Sun goes down and you're fine.

It's coming back that's the problem. It requires a red-eye overnight flight if you don't stop. The jet lag thing seems so much worse going from West to East. The times are all messed up. You take off noon from Hawaii and, if you don't stop, you get home around midnight (Pacific time). EXCEPT IT'S 6am IN NY AND THE SUN IS JUST COMING UP!! :wall:

It's not as easy as just staying up watching TV for awhile. Unless you can sleep well on a plane, you're toast for that day and the next.

The trip home, from HI to NY, completely discombobulates my internal clock.

If you're only going to break one leg, I highly recommend the return trip. The trip TO Hawaii si easy. Between the excitement of getting there and the fact that the entire flight takes place within a single normal day, the trip to HI is a breeze compared to the trip home.
