B&B or Other Lodging at Volcano National Park

We're spending the holiday's in Hawaii. 1 week in Kauai and 1 week on the Big Island. We're arriving on the Big Island on Dec 31 but don't check into the timeshare in Kona until Jan 1. We want to take the kids to Volcano National Park and would like to stay at/near the park on the 31st. Any recommendations on a B&B or other lodging. I find several on-line but it's hard tell.

There is an old historic hotel - Volcano House, right IN the park - we have stayed there.

There is also a military R&R camp in the park and if you have a military connection you can stay there - they allow current or former military to make reservations for friends and family.

Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) is open to all active and retired military, members of the Reserve and National Guard, active and retired Department of Defense civilian employees including Coast Guard Civilians, dependents and sponsored guests.

The military camp isn't fancy, but it's convenient and has a store, restaurant, bar, Rec room, etc.

Both places are very conventient, because they are located right there next to the big crater.

Our favorite and the one I always recommend is Kilauea Lodge in Volcano Village. We always stay in Tutu's Place which is a tw-bedroom cottage off site. It's perfect for us because the girls have their own room, and the second bedroom has twin beds. Plus, it's just charming.

Even if you don't stay here be sure to have dinner here one night. Reservations are a must.

We are arriving in Hilo Dec 29 checking in at kcr Dec 31 and have found GREAT difficulty finding any place that would rent for any fewer than 3 days in the east/ south area. We finally reserved in Hilo at the Dolphin Hotel, recommended in the BI REvealed. There was only the $285 a day suite available at KilaueacLodge.

I wonder if that's because it's during the Christmas/New Year's holiday period? We've stayed at the Kilauea Lodge for just one night during the summers. And we've paid much less for the 2-bedroom cottage.

We stayed a couple of times at the Lokahi Lodge. It is in the Chalet Kilauea Collection. You can go on line and check it out. The thing that we really enjoyed about it was in the morning someone would come and cook breakfast for everyone and it was a great time to talk to other people and learn about their ventures and where they came from. The room was clean and we had our own bathroom. It was very close to Volcano National Park and was also very reasonably priced. I wish I were going

Someone would have a lot of demand if they'd set up a decent hotel nearby, as I've seen this issue raised repeatedly and experienced it ourselves. When we did this, we stayed at a private duplex about 15 minutes from the park, but I noticed a year ago they were no longer in business as a B&B.

In order to build a hotel, the area would have to be zoned accordingly. I doubt it is. And changing the zoning would mean a big fight with locals.

We stayed at Aloha Junction B&B. Not 5 star by any stretch, but it was fine for the 2 nights we stayed there. And it was 5 minutes from VNP.

I can't believe that the Volcano House is still closed for renovation. It was closed in June 2010 when we went.
