How do I get my AT&T phone to work in Europe? What is the cheapest way to use the phone there?

I promise I'm not trying to be a smart-alec, but if it is a smartphone, the cheapest way to use it would be to find WiFi and use skype minutes to make your calls.

My wife is currently in Russia, and our daily calls have so far totalled $0.00, because she connects her Galaxy to wifi and skypes with me. (skype to skype, not skype minutes). Last time she was there, she had a Russian phone, and I used skype minutes to call it and her mother's home phone because it was cheaper than any other way.

Jim, Nothing's cheaper than free, but Skype without wi-fi is a non starter. If your phone is out of contract, AT&T will unlock it then you can put a local SIM card in and use it locally. If you just want the phone for very occasional or emergency use, call 611 and turn on Int'l Roaming for the month you'll be there. Calls are about a buck a minute.

But Skype is by far the cheapskate way to go- especially for calling back to USA.
